It looks and reads very similarly to the crack climbing chapter in Freedom of the Hills. I wonder if it's the same author.

I don't know.
I just looked at my copy of FOTH, and it is very soft on any sort of hand jamming technique. Of course this lead me to inspect the publication date where I found that I was a proud owner of the second edition, printed in 1967 (I would have been 6 years old at the time...)
How that stamp from my old college library got on there is a mystery to me. I wonder what the overdue charges on something like that are?

Cool - Dale Bard is a character. Last time I spoke with him he was at Petzl USA, anyone know what he's up to now?

I believe he also reps for Black Diamond and Five Ten.
Anyway, this was an historic article when it came out, and definitely worth the one star rating someone gave my post.
