I've heard mention of there being "plenty of offwidth variations" on the upper section of Washington Column's South Face route. Besides the chimney on pitch 8, is this true, are there more? I'm doing the SFWC this May and would love to add some extra spice (and possibly escape the crowds). If you know of any of these supposed variations post up! Thanks, Evan

Ask on Supertopo -- you'll probably get more than a few answers there.

I don't know who told you that, but they are proper full of Sh!t. There is a lot of wide on the column, but not near the South Face route. Check out Jojo, Power failure, Nowhere Man, Jesu Joy, Dwindling Energy, Wing of Bat, Tom Cat the Direct Route if you're looking for an adventure and my personal favorite, the Odyssey. Edited to hide my poor grammar.

THe chimney on p8 is great, that free pitch was my favorite on the route. Don't think there's any other wide though. I haven't done it, but I think South Central is supposed to have a ton of wide groveling.

Yup. What salmanizer said. AlTHOUGH.....the original ascent (Kor) did a 5.9 scruffy offwidth on the next to last pitch that pretty much everybody now avoids. We all go to the right of that dealio now. And it's drawn in on most topos anyway, so, yeah, pretty much what salmanizer said. No mystery chimneys/OWs on the SFWC route

Not to throw a wrench in you plans, but if you want offwidths, and to avoid crowds, take a look at the Sentinel. It has both requirements, and is the only feature in the valley that I havent been up. Mainly because those particular offwidths terrify me.

I don't recall any offwidths on SFWC. And I like offwidth.

We're doing the prow now (when the damn weather clears up!! its supposed to snow all weekend). No offwidth on there except for that short variation at the end. I think if we have any energy left we'll try something short in the valley.
