I live in a flat area. Eastern Alabama. Great climbing and bouldering are very close but not close enough. So my friend and i decided to climb a crane. It was roughly 140 meters in length and we multipitch style climbed it by setting anchors every 20 or so feet. Just wanted to suggest a new rush. Thanks

Good for you, CC. A good few years ago my girlfriend and I soloed the outside scaffolding on a 10 story building downtown, then made love on the roof in full view of the revolving restaurant across the road. Sometimes its the things you do against your better judgement that remain in your memories forever

Thanks Don't cranes usually have ladders in the middle? multipitching it seems like a good way to get caught.

Nah, we did it at night. The lights from Auburn University's campus lit us up just enough. Were planning on doing an even larger crane once summer starts.

I happened to stumble across a young couple who were under the impression they had the valley to themselves yesterday.

One of my apprentices soloed a tower crane a few years ago at night. I was mightilty impressed. He went right to the top and then pinched something off the tip so he could prove that he had done it too. A little less spectacular is that I have been to the top of a drag line. Was prolly up about 100 metres in the air. That was more a walk up a verrrrry long flight of stairs. The drag line was down for a 6 month long rebuild. They work on those things 24 hours a day for 6 months till it is back in production. Quite amazing machines to walk around in when they are going. The main machine room is as big as a ball room dance hall. I think it had a 120 cubic metre bucket. The one at Moura had a 200 cube bucket, that was big. They push the electric lead to those machines around with a D9 dozer. One got drowned a couple years ago in a big flood. Poor thing looked liked a prehistoric monster struggling to get out of the water but it lost it's battle. Where were we, oh yeah, climbing cranes, carry on.

I like monster machines. worked on a gold mine in NT a long time ago and they had some cool toys - favourite was the huge wheel loaders. Never climbed on the gear though, they were rabid about safety.
