We tried to find the trailhead yesterday, based on the description in "California Road Trip". The description is very good - but ended us at a fenced in driveway, not a parking area.

Were we close? Just a little off? Or has the situation changed?

(We were looking for Squarenail because Tollhouse was in a cloud - visibility about 20 feet!)

Hopefully you have found squarenail by now, but the turnout is a tiny area on the side of the 4 lane highway. You can drive right past it without noticing unless there is a car already parked there. If you stopped at a drive way, you were a half mile off or more maybe. If you really pay attention as you drive up or down the 4 lane, you can see there is only one section where a cliff could be hidden. That is the location.

The map on the Squarenail page shows the location precisely, but it does seem like a good idea to list the mileage from the top of the 4 lane as well as from Prather.

From the intersection of Tollhouse road and the top of the 4 lane highway, drive downhill on the 4 lane for 3.6 miles. Look for a tiny area on the outside of the highway on the downhill end of a road cut. A much larger turn out is on the inside of the highway in another hundred yards.

From the stop signs at the bottom of the 4 lane highway at the intersection of Lodge Road, drive 5.2 miles to Squarenail.

An occasionally maintained climbers trail goes up the edge of the road cut, then heads off through the bushes.
