How High Can You Safely Jump Down From?

Yesterday I was beach bouldering here on Oahu, the boulders look pretty tall to me, with a nice soft sand landing.

Anyways, I climbed up higher than I ever had before, my feet were probaly about 15 feet+ up. I couldn't find anymore holds, and was scared to jump down for a second, but then I finally did, and it was no problem. Defintely helped my confidence gettingthat over with.

I see in vids it looks like people are jumping down from pretty high up, is part of bouldering learning how to fall from high up? and what's the logical limit?

Well yes, falling correctly and not causing injury takes skill too. The logical limit depends on your skill/comfort level.

The logical limit? That's contextual. I will say that the height you are willing to jump down from is far less important than the height you are willing to unexpectedly fall from.

On a good landing, I am willing to top out at 20' on harder moves, 25' if it's well within my limits. On mediocre and bad landings, as I said before, it's contextual.

Careful there is rock as little as six inches under the sand in some areas there.

I agree with the contextual statement. I used to have relatively little fear of highball boulders until i bruised my calcaneus and fractured my tibia in two different non climbing related accidents this year. Now I really have to concentrate to get more than 10 feet off of the ground.

Thats the kind of answer I was looking for. Until you have experienced something yourself, or seen it in person, you might not know what the limits really are.

I really didn't know what was possible. Felt amazing to jump off from way up there and land safely. Now I am a little closer to finding the limit.

The unfortunate thing about this is that people tend to discover the limit by going over it. "OhOw, that was too far."

I see the "limit" as being so contingent on other factors than height as to be nearly meaningless. Parkour guys can land safely from much higher, onto much harder and/or uneven/small landings than I would ever describe as safe, but sure enough they do it again and again. One thing I would ask is how many times do you think you would likely be able to fall from the heights you have before something went wrong?

Taking a big fall/jump successfully does little to ensure future safety. There are just too many other factors.

I'm jaded though. I ripped a tendon jumping off of a sand dune and I never got full ROM back.
