I am considering an early morning run up the Great Arch. Anyone know if there are restrictions on how early you can climb? Planning on getting there at 6:30 or 7:00 AM.

Thanks in advance for the replies!

the park opens at 8:00 this time of year

I suppose you could park outside the gate and walk in earlier, but it'd be a much longer approach.

Explore the N. Side of Stone. You might not die of heat exhaustion over there.

Although it gets less than the S. side, the north sider still gets a lot of sun. The walls are not steep enough to shade the face and it actually gets pretty warm. It may buy you an extra hour or two, but I still wouldn't be too thrilled about climbing there this time of year, unless I lived very close and just got in a couple of laps early in the morning.

Just got back. As always, Stone Mtn. was a blast. Got there at 8:15, racked up in the lot, on the rock by 8:45, did Dirty Crack and The Great Arch, walked off the back side and was back to the car well before noon. It was hot but bearable at the start. However, it got hotter than hell when the sun hit us at about 10AM. The climbing was awesome, but I would not want to spend the afternoon there during the summer!

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I'm either going to brave the heat at Moore's or risk rain at Ship tomorrow, so hopefully it'll work out.Gotta love Summer in NC!

How is the climbing in NC around October? I am headed that way later this year and am hoping to get some climbing in at Stone MT and some of the other areas in the state. Any suggestions or advice? Any issues that i might need to consider, such as roads and parks being closed/open? My time frame is quite flexible. I am hoping to catch some good fall foliage this year; it's been a couple of years since I've seen some good fall colors and I'm looking forward to it. Will October be about the right time for that part of the country?

October can be good at Stone. Generally, the cooler, the better. Stone is pretty pleasant even when the temps are in the 30's. In general, I think that fall is the best limbing season here in NC and there is bound to be something that is good in October.

fall is the best time of year to climb in the carolinas. The winter hours are a bit shorter at stone. Park closes at 6pm i think.

Nothing should be closed until well into winter ie december/january

Awesome. I am excited to get back east for a bit. I've never done any climbing in the Carolinas, but I'm pretty excited about it.
