Hi

I'm heading to Canmore Alberta in the Canadian Rockies this summer. Im a strong rock climber and have tried my hand on ice a few times however keen to hit the alpine peaks.

Does anyone know of a good mountain school they could recommend? Or even a good guiding company?

I've been in and out of the region for over ten years and there's lots of opportunity. One company I highly recommend is Yamnuska, which do both guiding AND teaching. Check out http://www.yamnuska.com or ask any of the gear heads at any of the shops in Canmore or Banff (there's only two climbing shops per block, be careful you don't miss them both, heaven forbid you walk 20ft to the next one).

I did the 6 day intro to mountaineering course with Yamnuska, along with their Avalanche Safety 1 course with Yamnuska, and I second the recommendation for this company. Top notch guides, knowledge, and services. We had to come off the mountain 3 days early as our guide sprained his ankle. The owner of Yamnuska put us up at the ACC hostel, provided us with food for the remaining duration, and showed up at the hostel with a box of wine, and shot the shit with us for a few hours. After I returned home, I was made aware of a 30% refund on the course.

Nothing but class from that company.

Living in Calgary and being an enthusiastic rock climber and mountaineer I often use the guiding services from Banff and Canmore. Last winter I tried a new Canmore company called Mountain Skills Academy. I was very impressed and will say they proved to be the best mountain school I have used. I liked their course design, the guides were real pro's and I had a great time. Check em out: www.mountainskillsacademy.com . I am taking their mountaineering course this July, maybe i will see you there!
