Hi,
We are visiting Whistler soon. We boulder in the Peak District in England about 3 or 4 times a week up to V6 (not sure how this translates to grades in Squamish), and we would like to have a go at some bouldering in Whistler/Squamish (even though it will be hot and we will be weak!).
We were wondering if you can rent out bouldering mats/pads, and if you could recommend any areas to visit. With not so many bears :). Also we won't have a car.

hey there. I don't know about renting pads, but since Squamish has such a large international bouldering scene, you should be able to pick up a lightly used pad from someone whose trip is over, or buy new and sell before you leave. I think a friend of mine got his pad by trading some Euro two (very packable) cams in the parking lot.

Most of the bouldering is centred around the Chief making it pretty easy to hit most of the popular stuff without having to do too much driving. (A good guidebook is "Squamish Bouldering" by Marc Bourdon. A new edition is apparently imminent.)

go to Climb On, they rent pads. they can also provide you with a guide for a day to show you around the boulders.
their website also has some good info about squamish in general food, lodging, showers etc.

if you camp in the campground at the Chief you won't need a car to go bouldering. it's super condensed.
you can often hitch a ride into town, and sometimes back to the campground, but it's only about a 25 minute walk.

i spent last summer in whistler. absolute fantasy land for 20-somethings.
you'll probably get all the bouldering you could ever want in squamish. from whistler you can take a greyhound bus to the town of squamish, then walk/ hitch rides (guys and girls hitch hike all the time- it's pretty much the other form of public transportation around there) to the chief. there are so many people in the grand wall forest in squam, you won't need to worry about bears while bouldering.
there are also boulders that are short busrides from whistler village (nordic, creekside) to explore. google them, and if they seem interesting stop by the Core fitness centre in the village and ask the climbers if they're worth your while. you can also post a message on the notice board on the core to see if you can get anyone to take you to the boulders in pemberton (about 30min north of whistler)- it's a nice quiet area with a few good boulders.
but you'll probably not see much reason to leave squamish. camping at at chief is just $10 a night for 2 people, everyone's friendly, and there are just so many problems a short walk away from camp.
