i know that there is the hot deals thread, but in general, what are everyone's favorite websites and stores for getting new gear? which ones are the most helpful or have the best deals?

lots of good online stores, but if you are price shopping for specific items google shopping and spadout.com have good price comparers.

I use Moosejaw 9 times out of 10. Why? Because they have a price match guarantee AND offer 5% rewards points even on price matches. PLUS if you price match a single item over $100, you get a bonus $10 worth of points.

Just bought a pair of La Sportiva Mythos and Miura's for $162 shipped and still got $8 in rewards points. Not too shabby at all.

I've had nothing but positive experiences and service from mountaingear.com

Both on-line and in their store in Spokane. Unless I need something today, that's where I buy my gear.

yes! i got into climbing by stepping foot into this small internet store located in utica, il. became great friends with tom and mark, built their new shop across the street, and worked in the evenings drywalling for them for gear. I loved that store and those guys. unfortunently they sold the business and started Rescuedirect.com. The new store under same name is now based out of SLC, UT and i still give my business to him!

Free shipping for all orders over $50. I usually get my orders within 48 hours of shipping from SLC, UT to Cleveland, OH, and they hand-write a thank you on every invoice. http://GearExpress.com is by far my online retailer of choice.

Process of buying climbing equipment:

1) If you need help figuring out what you want / need, or need to try something on, go to a local retailer and buy it there. They give you a service, you pay a slight premium on prices for it so it can keep providing those services.

2) See #1. I know you tried to ignore it.

3) Go online.

I get most of my outdoors gear nowadays through backcountry.com. They have pretty much everything I ever need. The product descriptions and customer reviews are usually better than those anywhere else. Fast shipping, easy returns if you need them. They have free shipping after $50 (and really, how many times are you not spending at least $50 on gear?).

I've also used mountaingear.com and moosejaw.com pretty extensively and they're both pretty good. I stopped using moosejaw because I got sick of how "cool" they think they are with all their gimmicky crap.

moosejaw.com is my favorite...plus you get a good percentage of the purchase as points to use on more gear

I prefer to buy gear at brick & mortar locations to support my local businesses, but selection in Chicago is limited.

That said, I've had terrific experiences ordering from Rock/Creek based in Chattanooga, TN and my friends have visited their store and vouched for their awesomeness.
