I read not too long ago an account of an early ascent in the alps ... possibly one of the first on mt. blanc ... that included the inventory of the expedition's provisions.

It included a staggering number of cases of wine and brandy, and piles of other epicurean items like pheasants.

I thought this was somewhere in Krakauer's Eiger Dreams, but I can't find it.

Can anyone point me in the general direction? It was truly hilarious and mind boggling.

If I remember right they talk about that in Killing Dragons: The Conquest of the Alps. It is a good book and has lots of interesting stories in it.
