Finally went outside for the first time. I pumped and saved the milk. I ended up bringing an electric pump. For future moms, here is the list of things I needed:

1.Good double electric pump (makes it a lot faster so more climbing), bottles and such
2. Cooler and ice unless you are going to pump and dump. (FYI: Medela blue ice and cooler is good for 12 hours). For longer days, I plan to bring a regular cooler and put ice at the end of the day.
3. Pump wipe--medela sells them where you don't need soap. I found that they don't dry as readily, so I ended up needing extra water to rinse the pump parts
4. Few zip lock bags--they are convenient to store and rinse pump parts
5. Nursing cape
6. Extra water (see #5)
7. Antibacterial hand wash. I found wipes as apposed to liquid worked well to get rope grime off my hands.
8. I bought some nursing tank tops from costco, and they were awesome for pumping.

I lead outside for the first time since I was 13 weeks pregnant. Yay!

Like!

I'm glad you're working it out so that both you and your baby are getting what you need.

Comments from hikers on my huge pack full of pump stuff on my way up to a base of a sport climb

"Wow, are you preparing for an expedition?"
"That's a lot of stuff you are carrying. Are you back packing?"

During pumping from fellow climbers

"Is that someone's phone on vibe?!"

Let the good times roll.

Glad to hear that you are able to go craging again!

"Someone's phone on vibe", LOL!!! The sound really gets annoying after a while.

I hope you get to take your son with you next time. Nursing is so much more enjoable and so much less hassle than pumping, don't you think? Though in terms of carrying things, you will just swap the pumping stuff for baby stuff, and either way feel like you are carrying the entire house...

Clee - I'm curious, did you take all your pumping stuff up the route for multi-pitch, or did you just use it at the base b/c your little guy (girl?) wasn't there. I'm curious to know how the multi-pitch stuff would work out, although I know that I am not committed enough to try it lol.

My son is currently 4 and a half months old and is getting ready to go on his 4th weekend trip to the New River Gorge. He has also been on a few day trips as well. Climbing with a baby is not nearly as hard as I thought it would be - provided you have good friends that don't mind helping out, and obviously we haven't done any multi-pitch stuff.

We've found that 5 people actually works out the best - that way you can have two people climbing at once, and one person baby watching. Its helpful to go to a crag that has lots of climbs in one area, so that you can kind of camp out in just a couple of areas throughout the day and not be constantly on the move from climb to climb. That makes it a lot easier to settle down for naps. Also - if your breastfeeding - MAKE SURE you drink enough water!!! The first time we took my son out I think he was frustrated with my milk supply b/c I was dehydrated.

So far the longest I've done is 3 pitches. There was a debate as to bringing the pump up this climb because there is a nice ledge up top of the climb and my friend thought it would be cool to pump/have lunch up there. But in the end we decided on speed and efficiency and we finished the climb in close to 3 hours so I just pumped before and after. I think pumping on multipitch would be doable as long as belay isn't hanging and my partners would be willing to chill. Now is worth the trouble? I'm not sure anymore.

Ok ok you could do it on a hanging belay too, but that would be a bit uncomfortable.

lena, i think your answer was bang on!!!! i think you ( and i was too) pointing out the reality of having a baby, breastfeeding, and fitting in climbing.

personally, it was hard enough trying to pump breast milk in a controlled environment, let alone on a multi pitch climb.

just sayin'

THIS.
