Police say Murphy had intended to anchor himself with climbing gear and rappel back down, but lost his footing and handhold on the ledge.

Sad, I think I ran into this guy now and then. RIP.

Rest in peace Dennis Murphy. Thoughts and prayers to family and friends.

(I think I have written these words too frequently this year)

This accident (AKA 2 meter death zone) is actually pretty common in climbing while climbers are setting top rope or rap. you should always be on belay or some sort of protection while approaching edge , either from another anchor above or by a partner while reaching the anchors below.

in 80's a climbing instructor fell to his death while providing instruction to 20 some climbers . he accidentally step backward and fell from the edge.

My condolences. I lost a climbing partner to an accident in the Daks in the early 80s. Both he and his partner were killed. I didn't know why communications had stopped until I read about the accident in ANAM.

Well, damn, it was the guy I know. More info here:

A mistake any of us could make at anytime.

In reply to:
Murphy and his partner had finished climbing the route "Hesitation," and had walked across the top of the cliffs to the route "Partition," where they planned to rappel down, when Murphy fell at the anchor station, according to state police and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

"His partner was tying off ropes and such, and (Murphy) came around an obstacle, which I believe was a tree, and kind of stepped around the obstacle to get to that point, and that's when he slipped and fell," Winchell said.

The top area there is rocky with pebbles and needles, can be slippery.

I know that we are all aware (or should be) of the risks at the top, but we continue to be reminded the hard way.

God bless his family and friends as they deal with the loss.

Dennis was a close friend and climbing partner, and his love for life will be missed by everyone who was known him.

Please show your support for his family, and pay respects to this great person!

His family is having a viewing here on Friday between 4 and 7pm at J F Rice Funeral Home in Johnson City, NY: (http://binghamton.citysearch.com/profile/map/7703903/johnson_city_ny/j_f_rice_funeral_home_inc.html
)

On Saturday at 10am is the memorial service at the same location.

Rest in peace my friend.

Much Love Seth Kaeser

So sad. Sincere condolances.

Ropeing up to get to the decent trail from Hessitation or Overture would be exceptionaly uncommon at the top of Washbowl. Getting down to the rap station at the top of Partition does not have an obvious tree to go off of. lots of scrub brush. Never seen anyone rope up there. Apparently the accident did happen getting from Hessitation to the Partition rap station. It looked super slick getting to that rap station when i was up there 2 weeks ago. lots of dry grass and pine needles. We were both pretty carefull getting to the decent trail.. It would not be common practice to rap the cliff to decend after doing Hessitation but it would be somewhat common to rap in to do the last pitch of Partition.
