Any recommendations? I'm planning on spending the winter and I want to be able to pick a place with cheap rent and easy access to rock/ice climbing. The plan is to head to Calgary but I'm still pretty flexible.

Come on man theres really only one place to go, Mexico! Calgary will be cold, which means more money spent on living, plus the cold just gets plain old after a while in addition to harder access and shorter days. Mexico is cheap, good temps in the winter, lots of good rock, and did I mention cheap?

Well you could always live in the Ghost River Valley for the course of the winter. It's free... though somewhat windy and frigid. World class ice all around however...

I'm not sure what you heard but you won't find cheap rent in Calgary. Canmore is your best bet if you plan on staying in Alberta IMO.
