Rice Cooking
Can't Post

Dumb question which I may get ragged for, but everybody talks about cooking rice for eating on the cheap climbing. I've been on several camping trips and I don't think I've ever once seen anybody make rice. (Not that that means you're all lying, it just means that this is why I have to ask this question)

Are we talking about the instant bag rice with seasoning and beans? Or just straight up rice and then you add canned beans? Because doesn't straight rice take like 20 minutes to cook in boiling water? Seems like that would be prohibitively expensive with a small propane stove.

on average 10 to 15 minutes boiling rice it will be done. zattarains simmers for about 20. but man its good. and yes, it takes some fuel, but a pocket rocket on low flame will burn a canister for several hours or longer. you dont need alot of flame to simmer. but instant rice is done with just boiling water and turning off stove, course it sucks shit compared to a good grain of real rice, like jasmine or basmatti!

I premade a box of Goya rice and black beans. Tupperware in a cooler. good to go.

if you're going to bring it dry.. instant rice.. doesn't take that long.

Immersion method
Bring water to boil add rice ( 2 cup water to 1 cup rice) salt and drop of oil. Boil for 5 mins. leave sitting with lid on untill all water absorbed. 10-20 mins (After that gets a bit cold but still ok to eat). Usually untill rest of food cooked.

If you add a few teaspoons of vinegar your rice will be much fluffier!

I've done the slow cook method of regular rice. It takes too long, so we do instant & a can of black beans. Bring some cumin, coriander & cilantro with you & you have a tasty meal.

cook rice all the time. But I generally run a coleman double burner off a big refillable tank. I don't think I'd cook rice as much on a single burner pocket stove.

Minute Rice (in a box, as shown above, not that stupid wasteful bag shit) is the way to go. You only have to bring the water to a boil, and then set it aside for 20 mins or so. No simering, quicker, more fuel efficient.

Go brown for your complex carbs.

You can save fuel by soaking the rice in water for at least a few hours or longer before cooking it. The rice will start absorbing the water and rehydrating, shortening your boil or simmer time. This is a common technique with backpackers in order to save fuel.

Well, I mean I was going to use this knowledge of rice cooking on a sport climbing trip...so really it should go there.

No!

I've been reading "Campground" for years, and finally somebody started a useful thread.

I know where it is now -- please don't send it away!
