Will be traveling to Joshua Tree for the first time next week. Only going for a day or two - will be traveling with my climbing partner. We lead climb up to 5.8 or 5.9 routes. Any suggestions on where to go? Preferably lots of routes and some easy ones to warm up on... Thanks! C PS - What is a good area to camp?

Lots of campgrounds in the park, try to get into Hidden Valley, Ryan or jumbo rocks - in that order. When you say lead climb, do you mean sport climbing? Joshua Tree is a bit different area, there aren't many well protected bolted routes below 5.10. If you don't have at least a few cams and stoppers, i would say you will be doing quite a bit of hunting.

ditto on camping in hidden valley, I suggest the 50 trad climbs in joshua tree book, it's pretty descriptive and will put you in the right areas for alot of climbs. Around hidden valley campground, I'd hit up toe jam, double cross, and head over to intersection rock for some overhang bypass and there are several other good lines on intersection rock. Like quiteatingmysteak said, Jtree is an almost exclusively gear route area, there aren't even many bolted tr/rap anchors, usually you end up on some sketchy walk off (i've torn way more shorts on the way down, than on the way up) If you don't have gear, there's plenty of bouldering, and gunsmoke is not to be missed.

Ditto on the gunsmoke.. It's a must do. Walk on the wild side is bolted, and quite good...new toy is also good, and has a rap off... Bring gear, and tape, and get there early in the week if you want good camping. Although, this early in the season, you should be ok.

There's a very good guidebook that highlights classic 5.9 and under routes in the park- complete with excellent approach and descent beta. I highly recommend it for first time visitors to the park, as the regular guide book and the park in general can overwhelm many people, especially if they only have a day or two to climb.

Southwest Corner and Cryptic, 5.6 and 5.7 respectively--and you won't need to place any gear, just clip the bolts. As far as camping goes, I'd say Hidden Valley first and Ryan Campground second. Curt

I can get you set up, I may even be able to loan you a guide book. There is also the possiblity of renting one from the Joshua Tree Outfitters.
