Not a motorcycle, but a vespa. Max speeds around 45-50mph. Worked fine, I might second guess freeway travel but I wouldn't mind using a motorcycle on short highway speed jaunts.
Just pretend you're in India or China and large objects on the backs of bikes/scooters/motorcycles is completely normal. At least a crash pad isn't as dangerous as the guy I saw on a motorcycle with seven propane tanks stacked on some plywood and tied down with coir to his kick stand and rear fender.
