Well, I'm having knee surgery tomorrow. I've had knee problems for many years, and first had surgery on this knee in 1978 for osteochondritis dessicans. Now, I have several loose bodies (joint mice) floating around. They have been around for several years, but have gotten very troublesome recently.
I found this old (1928!) paper describing the problem/surgery I'm having tomorrow:

I thought it was interesting. Hopefully, I won't be laid up for long. The surgeon is going to try to do it arthroscopically, but it appears at least one of the fragments is too big to fit through the scope, in which case he'll have to open it up.

Complications may include moosebumps, rodent DVT, and dissecting canine aneurysms.

Home from surgery, under anaesthesia for about 1.5 hrs, I feel really good, but the local I'm sure is still dominating.
I feel like crushing about a dozen beers.
Doc pulled out a 1+ inch chunk of bone, kind of C-shaped. Lots of spurring, some of which was shaved down. No meniscus left in the medial compartment, but I expected that. Brain feels remarkably lucid, compared to the heavy anaesthesia of 32 yrs ago.
Biggest complaint is the caffeine withdrawal headache, from not having coffee this morning.
Not expecting a miracle, but it would be nice to go another 5-10 years of skiing, before the seemingly inevitable TKR.

Glad to hear it went well. 1" sounds pretty big.

good luck with the recovery.
my dad had both knees opened up in the late 1950s, after an injury playing hoops. he still gets around, but it looks like no fun.
just picked up a nice meniscus tear myself. i try not to think about the problems in the other knee, what bone-on-bone is going to feel like, etc.
time to start thinking warm, fuzzy thoughts about gym climbing in caves without drop knees.

Well...here we go.
The last time I posted, it felt great, and I thought "the local must still be dominating"...
Wow, was that the truth! I was probably a bit too aggressive/overconfident with it, and did too much ROM while the local was still in there. I spent an exceptionally painful (8/10) night, had to move every 5-10 minutes between 1 am and 6 am.
Lie down for 5 minutes, pain grows to 8/10. Sit up, pain goes back to a 5. 5 minutes later, its an 8 again. Stand up, back to a 5. 5 minutes later, its an 8 again. Lie down. 5 minutes later its an 8 again. All night long. Doubled up on the narcs, no effect. Doubled up on the ibu at about 5 am, and finally got mild relief. Surgeon called me at 7 am, said to triple the narcs. (He's known for being conservative with the narcs).
Weird dreams with narcs.
Much more comfortable last night and now. The "open" part of the surgical incision (part arthroscopy, part open), still bleeds pretty easily. It just has steri-strips on it. Probably could have used a suture or two.
So, I'm trying to not range it much until the bleeding improves. Seeing the surgeon tomorrow morning, and will write more later.
