The title pretty much explains itself. A few buddies and I are taking our first bouldering trip outdoors this weekend, so I need your trustworthy advice...would Little Cottonwood Canyon or Joe's Valley tailor a first-timer's needs?

Where are you guys from? If you're from SLC, definitely go to joes... you can go to LCC anytim. If you guys have been climbing a lot in the gym, you'll notice that joes is much more akin to climbing in the gym than LCC is. LCC has lots of technical, thin, slabby stuff with bad holds that require good footwork... something the gym does not emphasize at all.

Also, the trouble with being a beginner in LCC is that the really easy warmup stuff is, for the most part, either tall or hard. With the exception of the shothole boulder at SG, warmups are fairly challenging.

Not to mention, its still too hot to climb really well in LCC.

All in all - go to joes for the weekend. You'll enjoy it.

We do live in the SLC area. In the gym, we are climbing v2. I bouldered outside last week for the first time, and its definitely a different experiences. So knowing that, us climbing v1-v2, is there enough at joe's to make the trip worth it?

Plenty. Get the black bible (Baldwin, Beck, and Russo bouldering guide to utah), head down there, find a couple areas and have a blast.
