Hello once again! I can't seem to want to stay away from this place. So, i was working on this 5.12 sport route and the beginning had a pretty strenuous bouldery start which is when it happened. I was using this two finger side pull pocket with my right hand and then changing the hand position to use the pocket as an undercling. Anyways, long story short, I heard a pop in my wrist while I was changing hand position. It felt like my ring finger tendon went out of a groove in my wrist and then went right back causing the tendon a lot of irritation. I haven't lost any range of motion and it doesn't hurt when i just move my fingers around. I only feel moderate pain when i'm doing anything like pulling or squeezing with my fingers. The pain goes from my middle finger and down my forearm. Nothing is sore to the touch except for that spot in my wrist where i felt the tendon move/pop and it's not so bad. Any ideas what it could be? What should I do other than not climb? thanks a bunch!

i just irritated my wrist a bit more when opening a heavy door and it hurt pretty bad. So, it seems to happen when i'm pulling on something below my waist with my hand perpendicular to the ground (thumb side up)...for example: opening a door with a vertical handle or pulling on a sidepull that is below my waist. No climbing for a while. Going to buy a wrist brace today.

Sounds like you have a snapping ECU tendon, also known as an ECU tendon subluxation. If you do in fact have this injury – it has the potential to get seriously out of control (as do any tendon problems). I have been dealing with this since about February and have to get it repaired at the end of the month. Mine is also coupled with a TFCC tear, but judging by your description of how it happened that is probably not the case for you. But the thing that SUCKS about this is that it can get worse - much worse - if you keep climbing hard day in and day out. The ECU tendon is a part of the elbow tendon that causes tennis elbow and with all the swelling I wound up with tennis elbow, golfer's elbow and triceps tendonitis - which has been horrible! I managed to keep this injury at bay for about 6 months by taking week long stretches off when it gets too bad. I also use mineral ice, Tylenol and Advil before I climb. I put a piece of tape tightly around my wrist joint – which helps secure the tendon from moving over the bump on my wrist. I also put a piece of tape or an elbow brace over my elbow tendons, which seems to help. If you choose to continue climbing as I did – which I don’t really recommend – avoid pinches at all costs. If you blow off of one too many, you’re in for some seriously excruciating pain that will definitely prolong this injury. Also stay away from side pulls. I think your best bet is to take 2-4 weeks off and then pay close attention to your tendon. It may have just been a fluke, and won’t happen again. However, if it continues to slide out, you’ve most likely torn your tendon sheath and will probably need to get it repaired.

Wow, sounds awful. I'm sorry to hear that. I don't think i'm quite at that point. I've stopped climbing completely until the pain goes away before doing anything "physical". I went to see a hand specialist and he seemed to think that my ring finger tendon popped out of it's place and over another tendon in my wrist. I have no swelling and still have complete range of motion which led him to believe that I haven't torn anything or done any serious damage. I just irritated the shit out of it and should just wait a few weeks until it's gone. My only worry is the possibility of this happening again or more frequently...only time will tell. I'll keep updating if anything comes up. Thanks!
