stretching ankle/calf for jamming

i'm working on my foot jamming technique. it seems as though half the battle is having the ankle flexibility/strength to stand up on a angulated foot. i've heard that tendon stretching is a bad idea cause it just makes tendons more prone to sprains. however, if my ankle was just a little looser (perhaps its the some muscles in my lower leg too) then i think jamming would be easier. a pretty good stretch can be achieved by useing hands on the outside of the foot, i wonder if i would be doing more harm than good.

also, are there any exercises or cheap rigging that can simulate or help with foot jammings?

thanks
