I went to Purgatory Chasm in Sutton, MA, on October 15th (Friday) to TR. We noticed the signs saying that a permit was required, so we went to the ranger station to ask where we could get a permit, and the ranger there told us that they were no longer issuing new permits "pending a state review on climbing in the area." So as of recently, Purgatory is now closed to all new climbers who weren't grandfathered in with an old permit. This is a shame because although I've never climbed here, one look around was enough to see that this is by far the best climbing in the area. The closest comparable location is an hours drive away.
