My sons and I are thinking of going climbing in southern Europe for a few days the end of March. We have been thinking about southern Italy, Spain or Greece but are open to other ideas. We are looking for sport climbs, 5.9-5.10. Any suggestions to where to go? Cindy

Cindy I live here in Southern Europe (Italy) and have been here for a year now. There is a lot of climbing within a reasonable drive from Napoli in ranging levels. I live in the Northern Naples Area in a small town called Gricignano d' Aversa which is closer to Caserta than Naples, so we climb mostly in Caserta about 15 minutes from my house. However we do occasionally make the trip and drive to the Gaeta and Sperlonga area for some different climbing also. If you want the most possible route options Gaeta/Sperlonga is amazing. All the climbing is on Sea Cliffs and it stretches for as far as you can see. If it's raining there are 2 caves (may be more, we've only found these 2) we climb in, if it's dry we stay out on the beach and climb. A lot of anchors (most common routes) are already placed, but if you climb with your own protection there are still plenty of routes for you as well. As far as gear goes if you need anything while you are out here, if you do indeed pick a Southern Italy tour, the local sports stores (Decathalon) always has plenty of ropes, harnesses, belaying devices, and quickdraws available. However like I said if you do place your own protection, I would be sure to bring plenty as the stores only seem to have minimal on hand, a couple cams at best. I hope you enjoy your trip to Europe to climb, and if you do choose Italy I hope you enjoy it. Some people love it and some hate it, but overall this seems to be the cheapest country I've been to as far as good food goes. Anyway I've written a novel, so good luck with your choices, and happy climbing!

I just realized I'm a year late, I thought your post said 2010. Sorry, I hope your climbing went well.

Hello! I am currently staying in naples with my friend and I would really like to go climbing but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information available about where I can go, or where I can search for a partner, and I was wondering if you needed a partner at all to climb with. Essentially I am looking for someone who has equipment too since all I have is a harnass my powder bag and shoes, I am in the middle of backpacking through europe and wouldn't be able to bring a lot of equipment with which to go climbing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks! also here is my address if its easier to reply directly by email... samina.ahmed@hotmail.com thanks a lot
