Hi, I'm new to montreal and looking for a partner who wants to climb at allez-up. I'm free anytime, afternoons or evenings. Prefer someone who lead certified (or capable of passing test), as toproping gets boring .. any ability is welcome, let's climb!

Hi Tradmaster, I will also be new to the area as of the end of May 2011. I'll be keen to explore the climbing areas around Montreal to stop me from going stir crazzy at the Out Laws house. I will be in Montreal indefinitely and am I normally climb a couple of times a week. I'm keen to climb with anyone that knows how to lead belay and is a good spotter when bouldering. In Australia I tend to climb up to grade 25 and boulder upto v6. I have all my own gear, so no issues there. Feel free to send me an e-mail if you don't mind showing me the best spots to climb.Wink

I'm moving back to Montreal this Sunday, and am always willing to climb.

To Ozzie: IN Montreal proper, there's only indoor climbing. There's a little bit of decent climbing in Rigaud, which is about 20 minutes outside of the Montreal. Otherwise, there's a fair bit of good climbing in the Laurentians, but that's roughly an hour away.

Action Directe gym in Boisbriand (north of Laval), I've dropped in and found partners there.

Centre VertiCAL at Cegep Andree-Laurendeau is nice.

Check with the ACC Montreal section, they climb a lot at Allez-Up (generally very crowded), some members go to Horizon-Roc and they also have have a few outings.

Le Club d'Escalade de Lanaudière the club mostly climbs outdoors, not much planned outings but lots of beta from the members.

Could you tell me about the climbing in the Laurentians.

I might be relocating to Montreal later on this summer, how does it compare to climbing in Squamish?
When does the season begin. Which areas do you recommend? Any other close by areas to climb?

My mom's family is from there, she said the skiing was great when she was young, in the Laurentian Mountains.
I'm seriously considering relocating there since I could have dual citzenship and a very warm large group of my family lives there.

The Laurentians are not just some crag, they're a mountain range. There's no comparison to west coast ranges as out on the east-side the mountains are much, much older, time has weathered and softened features.

Montreal is frikkin cold in the winter, colder than here in Toronto, and the winter lasts a little longer. The season where its possible to climb without frostbite runs April to October, but its comfortable in the May-Sept range, the summer heat not being a big issue.

I don't know how the mosquito/black fly situation is in the spring, but ill assume its frikkin awful like the rest of the east of the country.

Black Flies aren't out yet! but climbing is starting very soon.
There are also a few good cliffs in Lanaudière, and you can find the new updated guidebooks in the climbing stores here (La Cordée and Mountain Equipment COOP).
But sadly there are very few cliffs higher than 2 pitches.

At the worst of the black-flies:
Wear light coloured clothing with pants and long sleeves.
Botanical OFF works well, ankles, lower legs, neck, wrists, etc.
Belayer NEEDS to have a headnet on to keep his sanity and his eyes on the climber (the OR ones are good and fit over a helmet.)

So anyone up for a climb? I've been in Montreal for 2 weeks and I'm itching to get on anything, sport, trade ... you name it I'm up for it.

I'm not working yet and my climbing gear hasn't arrived from Australia yet, but I have a harness, shows and a belay device, so as long as you have a rope and draws its all good. I have a car too, so I'm happy to try any area within a few hours of the West Island.

Send me a PM if your keen to climb.

For more places to look up for partners, you can also check out escaladequebec.com but it will help to know some French.

Hi Natalia,

I've been in Montreal for about 7 weeks now and have gone climbing in 2 areas outdoors and one gym. Happy to go for a climb with you as my gear has just arrived from Australia and hence I'm totally self sufficient. I also tend to go to Allez Up on Wednesdays or Thursdays if you are interested.
Let me know when you'd like to go.

Cheers,

David (Ozzie)

I'm in Ottawa (2 hours from Montreal) and often climb north in the Laurentians -- Montagne d'Argent usually, but also Val David -- whcih are about 2 hours from Ottawa and closer (1h30?) from Montreal. Meeting up there could work.
