How is the sport climbing in Castle Rock in the 5.10 – 5.12+ range (in terms of quantity, is there any?) I am seeing a lot of top roping pictures, but not many of people actually leading. And if there is sport, what’s the best guidebook that includes sport?

A handful of one pitch leads but mostly a bouldering area.

Yes, there are a few sport routes in that range. No, they are not any good.

Bruce Morris' guidebook is the one to get. The previous edition from 2000 is pretty decent too.

Most routes are pretty short. Bear in mind that the area sandstone is pretty fragile after wet weather -- holds can break easily. The usual guideline is to wait 2 or 3 days after rain, but this time of year it can be wet and soggy up there even if it's dry in the Santa Clara valley.

Check out Pinnacles National Monument as an alternative -- REI carries Brad Young's excellent guidebook.

Mickey's Beach

Still, not a lot of routes (a few good ones but they're hard).
