Anyone have any info on sport climbing in India? I am heading to India for the better part of a year and am debating bringing my climbing gear along. I plan on travelling through most of the country, I know there is a lot of sick bouldering and trad, but I only have gear for sport.

Thanks,

Trevor

I was in India in January...it's a big country, where are you going?

Didn't do any climbing, but I can give you a rundown of the geography.

In Rajistan (state) there's Jaipur (pink city). It's surrounded by mountains. In fact, to give you an idea the city has a "great wall" built around it. Good place to visit, the Maharaj is still in power and it's very authentic untouched India. The whole area is very rugged. I got around quite a bit and it was just mountain after mountain in back country like you wouldn't believe. Do some research, and I'm sure you'll find plenty of quality climbing in that area as well as amazing sightseeing.

as far as sport (duh!) there has to be!

There's a place near Hampi, probably a couple hours away that's sandstone sport. I don't remember the name, but there was something on it in one of the climbing mags in the last half a year if I remember right. Keep digging for info. It's supposed to be good climbing there! Maybe do some google searches?

A single quick google search got me to this page:

http://climbinginindia.blogspot.com/...ampi-and-badami.html

Rohit is super helpful. I met him in Hampi while he was working on the guidebook. Badami is the sport climbing area I was thinking of. Send Rohit an e-mail, and I'm sure he'll help you out. If you go over there, then buy the guide and support his enormous amount of effort (endless overnight trains back and forth between Bangalore and Hampi). If you go to Hampi for bouldering (some of the best I've seen in the world) then stay at the Goan Corner which is across the river and to the right (easy to find) and Sharmella has free crashpad rentals to anyone staying in her guesthouse. When I was there, she had maybe 8 crash pads? It was AWESOME!

Have a blast!

Awesome. Thanks for the info Josh, I'm so stoked now. I really wanted to do some Hampi bouldering, I just didn't want to carry a crashpad around India, so thats a sick deal.

thanks man!

I live in Bangalore. Could hook you up with folks, or you can join up with us, when headed out.

There's plenty around here. Near Bangalore. Sand stone trad (lots of horizontal crack systems), sport (Ramanagaram, Savandi - multipitch), bouldering, Hampi, Turahalli, and many unnamed boulder gardens, big wall stuff (Nandi).

Check out Bangalore India Climbing groups on facebook. you can connect with us through there.

Awesome. We are in Bidar right now, probably be in Hampi in a couple days when my bike is fixed. We have bouldering gear with us and a full sport rack with rope in Gokarna. Thanks for the FB link, this is perfect, I'll get in touch with you guys for sure.

Peace,

Trevor
