Took my GF bouldering in the indoor gym last night and she took a very short fall and landed perfectly square...somehow destroying her talus. Two trips to the ER and a trip to a foot specialist today and she is having surgery next wednesday. Just wondering if anyone else has had this and how that injury healed up for them. Appreciate any insight.

Due to limited circulation through that part of the ankle, talus fractures may or may not heal well. Nonunion across the fracture is unfortunately common. Mine didn't heal, and despite surgical efforts to screw the bone back together, the talus became necrotic and further surgery (fusion) was required. It hasn't been life altering; I'm still climbing, but it's not the best outcome by a long shot. My advice would be for your friend to follow every protocol that promotes healing. That includes the obvious ones, like no smoking, good diet, rest, and restraint. She should also work with her orthopedic surgeon and health care program so that she gets post-operation therapies like ultrasound and massage. Hope the outcome is a positive one.
