It sounds like you're worried about costs. I would recommend staying in Tonsai for a myriad of reasons. I was there in Jan 08 and I found a room for $10 and meals were probably $2-4? A really good piece of beta, is you can get those huge 5 gallon jugs of water from a store, and pay a deposit. In the meantime, you can switch empties for a small fee for a full one, and you get your deposit back when you're done in the end. It's amazingly cost effective, and you don't pollute the area with empty water bottle trash since they are reused/refilled. Enjoy!

I was in Railay May 2008. East Railay rooms with AC were about $24 US, West Railay close to double that but you get your own bungalow pimp as hell. Didn't stay in ton sai but when I looked they were around $10 for a shithole. I can't really remember boat fares - I'm thinking about $3 one way if you have a boat load.

Yes, it was $10 for a shithole. Wink I was traveling for a year and trying to keep costs down!

Hey no worries man - I traveled India/Nepal/Pakistan for several months then on to Europe and stayed in some serious shitholes so I could afford to stay on the road. I wouldn't trade a single night in any of those fucked up places though. Now I'm just older, have less time, more money, and a wife I don't want to subject to the character-building life of low budget travel. Hell yeah for traveling for a year - good shit!

Hey man, I just got back and spent about $500 usd in 2 weeks. My shit hole bungalo was 300 bht a night. food was about 100-200 bht a meal. The boat from Oahnong was about 120 bht to Tonsai. Scooters are like 200 bht a day in Oahnong if you wanna explore a little. You can save a bunch if you buy all your supplies in Krabi before you go over to Tonsai. Oh, and beer is 60-70 bht in Tonsai :)

I just got back last week and spent that over as three week period minus airfare.

Someone said Tonsai above, I would recommend Railey, sunrise side over Tonsai. Much more choice when not climbing, less partying.
