Wrist pain during mantles/pushups

In the last few weeks, I've noticed an increasing pain on the top (read: not palm-side) of my wrist when I do any sort of pushing exercise: mantles when I climb, pushups when I train, and downward dogs/inversions when I'm practicing yoga.

I get tendinitis fairly easily -- I developed it in my elbows when I started bouldering more frequently and in my shoulders when I swam competitively -- so I wouldn't be surprised if that were the problem. Trigger point massage, ice, and rest help those, so I'm applying those techniques to my wrist now to see if it helps. I try to take Aleve regularly, but after years of anti-inflammatories, my stomach isn't always so keen on that.

It could be a more serious problem requiring surgery, but I'd like to first try some self-administered remedies to see if that alleviates any pain. Besides RICE-ing, does anyone have any suggestions for exercises, stretches, or techniques I could do on my own before heading to a doctor? I'm sure other people have had this type of pain before -- what diagnosis did you get, and how did you recover?

Thanks in advance.

PS - I've searched this forum for answers to this question, but haven't found much other than this thread, which matches my symptoms but offers no explanation or treatment:

I'm sure there are some answers in the forum archives, but I haven't found them yet.

Try to be specific in location and quality of the pain. Use words like "ulnar," "radial," "dull [pain]", "sharp," etc. Pain at rest? No pain at rest? Pain only with active movements? Pain that lasts after doing the offending movement? Isolated pain (and where)? Pain when moving fingers (which fingers)? What makes it better? And so forth.

Thanks,
A Wrist Injury Survivor

i have similar issues. I always do pushups on my fists; mantles i try to avoid by climbing on a rope.

could be tight forearm muscles or inflammation of the actual joint. At one point i had a fluid pocket in my wrist and had to take time off. If it becomes an issue and a simple Vitamin I regiment and stretching doesnt get rid of it, then might want to see a PT/Hand doctor

For the fluid pocket i had a week long regiment of Vioxx then IB with rest. didnt do PT for it.

I had a similair issue 2 years ago. I forget what I found caused it but I laid off for 2 weeks or so then only did push ups using a set of dumbbells. It allows you to do them them without bending your wrist and I have never had a problem since.
