G'day everyone,
Every time I drive out 80 towards SacTown my eye is drawn to the big blocky bluff to the right, just past Vallejo, East of the Six Flags amusement park (see [1]).
Has anyone checked it out, either for roped climbing or bouldering? If so, is it any good? The main cliff looks quite loose and blocky, but it looks like it's shed a fair number of boulders that might offer some ok bouldering, even if the main cliff is too loose to climb on.
I've always meant to go check it out, but haven't found the time to track down the status of the land (private property etc.).

After a bit of poking around it looks like this area is known as "Sulphur Springs Mountain" [1], and although it looks like it might be state land, I haven't found anything definitive to confirm that.
It also looks like the rock is volcanic (perhaps like Mt St Helena, which also has an old mercury mine on it), which could be a good sign - a lot of volcanic rock (when it isn't dangerously loose) offers good climbing.

Hi Peter,
There have been questions asked about the area on the internet over the years. One came up on supertopo a while ago, you might search that forum. I think the upshot is always that it is chossy and on private property, and highly visible above the ranch house.

Thanks caughtinside. Shame the place is off-limits, as that bouldering traverse on Youtube looks quite good (for a local crag).
At least now I don't have to wonder every time I drive past. ;-)

no sweat. If you haven't been, the Vacaville boulders are an excellent and legal roadside pump with a short approach to some good stuff. A nice way to break up a drive.

Yeah I hit the Vaca boulders for the first time in early January and had a blast, despite it being pretty muddy. That's part of what got me thinking I really need to check out that big bluff (Hunter's Hill)!
