I am in shock at this point. I can't even believe what I just read. It hurts!! Andria and myself spoke on occasion and I remeber her emailing me at home with pictures of her first climbs in the valley. I also remember speaking to her about my screen name. She was interested in it very much since it was very close to her email name. It was paloma and mine Pamola. From what I learned from her she seemed like a great girl with everything going for her. It is always upsetting to get news like this.

My heart goes out to anyone who's lives were touched by this beautiful person.

Climb on sweet girl, climb on and never look back....

It just doesn't seem real!!!!

Wow Hillary... What you wrote moved me very much. I didn't know her, but know many who did. I feel as if I know her quite a bit more now after reading your last reply, which makes me even sadder.

As I sit in my cube working late, reading this thread, tears come down. God calls those early whom he loves, and Andria was loved by everyone...I know I have to get on with life, that's the way it works, but memories remain.
keep faith, hillary.

This obituary appears in the 12/27/02 edition of the Arizona Republic, a Phoenix newspaper.

Andria...

Or, you may just check it out below. Andria's love of climbing was well-known, and appropriately highlighted in her obit.

---------------------------------

Andria Ligas, 19, died Sunday, Dec. 22. Born March 24, 1983 in - Gillette, Wyoming, Andria was a gifted athlete, artist and scholar who never wasted a moment. She graduated at the top of Phoenix Country Day School's Class of 2000, was a member of the Cum Laude Society and the recipient of numerous scholastic awards. She was one of only a handful of Arizona high school students awarded the prestigious Flinn Foundation Scholarship to attend a public Arizona university. A junior at the University of Arizona, she was an interdisciplinary studies major with a focus on linguistics and Spanish. As a senior at Phoenix Country Day, Andria discovered her talent for running when she joined the cross-country team. She was a member of the University of Arizona's Triathlon group, and in 2001 she was the youngest competitor in the Tucson Toro Marathon, which she finished first in her class and in the top 100 overall. This year she competed again and came in 33rd, qualifying for the Boston Marathon, which she planned to do in April 2003. Her greatest athletic love, however, was the challenge and adventure of rock climbing; she had climbed at Camelback Mountain, Superstition, Cochise Stronghold, Yosemite, Joshua Tree and Mt. Lemmon. Andria was also a talented artist, leaving many poems, paintings, drawings and journals filled with sketches. She was involved in theatre as both a performer and set designer. In 2001 Andria traveled to Romania and Hungary and backpacked throughout Europe; she had also traveled many times across the United States. Andria was an inspiration to those who knew and loved her for her passionate love of learning, her resilient self-determination, and her genuine sense of awe in all that she saw and experienced in her short but very full life. She is survived by her parents, David Andrew Ligas and Carol Ann Hofford, and by her grandparents, Milford and Maria Ligas and Nancy Hofford. Andria's maternal grandfather, Harry Raymond Hofford, Jr., preceded her in death in April 2001. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 27 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, 330 W. Coral Gables Dr., Phoenix, AZ 85023. A reception will be following. Flowers may be sent to the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Andria Ligas Memorial Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 44372, Phoenix, AZ 85064.
Published in the Arizona Republic on 12/27/2002.

Everything that needs to be said has been said. I have no words. Though I never met her, I did read some of her postings and have seen her pic's.
I myself am sitting here at work feeling like I lost one of my own.

I'm at a loss

What a beautifully-written obituary above!

As I type this, Andria's funeral is taking place. I wasn't able to go, but Hillary did ask me to send along a few words for her to read.

In the meantime, I'd like to share with you a few more photos of Andria.

Andria loved life! She squeezed every drop out of it that she could. Her enthusiasm was infectious - her joy contagious.

I don't know where we were about to go when I took this picture, or what adventure we were about to share, but you can tell by the look on her face we're gonna have fun!

after the adventure. I love this photo because she is wearing her beloved "Andria Suit".

The struggles of the past few hours show in the "battle scars" on her legs, and she looks pleasantly knackered but satisfied from a great day of climbing.

So here she sits, leaning forward on the edge of her seat giving us the play-by-play account - effusive and effervescent.

I didn't know Andria at all, but judging by all those who did, she must have been a great person and I am sorry for the loss. A great quote to remember "To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering." Everyone must find the meaning in this tragedy, and if you do it will only make you stronger. I bet that Andria will be looking down from above on each and every one of you who knew her in your search for a deeper meaning. My condolances and prayers go out to each of you who knew her, and to her family. God Bless!

When the shock wears off, and it will, embrace her life by knowing that she is always there with you. Not just in a metaphysical way or in memories; close friends tend to color who you are in ways you may never consciously appreciate but you’ll walk with them all your life.

I’ve read some of your posts on this site I hope your enthusiasm and positive energy don’t diminish.

I've spoken with Hillary and Chris, and also Ed Swann.

From all accounts the funeral went very well, at least as well as these sorts of affairs can go.

You'll be happy to know that for the first time since Andria died, Hillary sounded [on] her old chipper self. It sounds as though the funeral was good therapy.

I wish I could have been there!

I hope that those who were will share with us.

Pete,

My wife and I were at Andria's funeral as well. I wanted to let you know that your words, as spoken by Hillary, were quite moving and in my opinion sincerely appreciated by those present.
