I'm moving to MI on Sunday and I'm having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that I'll be leaving all the rock in Arizona. Does anyone know of anywhere else to climb in the Lower Peninsula besides Oak Park? [ This Message was edited by: asuphil on 2002-12-27 23:33 ]

Sorry. There may be some exposed rock in the northern lower peninsula where there are more hills, but I haven't heard of any.

The only place to climb outdoors in the lower peninsula, that I know of, is Grand Ledge just west of Lansing. Decent, but see if you can appreciaate the following analogy. Since you are from AZ, (I've climbed in the Devil's canyon area) Grand Ledge will be like skiing the bunny hills after living is aspen. Sorry

Check out the Niagara Escarpment - It'll probably involve some drive time, but I've heard its ranked up there with some of the classic Euaropean crags (French limestone)

Hey, how far are you from the Ontario boarder? If you are any where near it you can probably head up here for so sick climbing! Lion's Head is about 4 hrs from Port Huron/Sarnia Milton area is about maybe 3. and there are many others! If you go south you could go to the Red which is just stellar climbing and then New! so you will have to travel a bit thats for sure!

I don't know where Jackson is, but the RRG is about 7 hours from the Michigan/Indiana state line. Add about 3 or four hours to that and that'll get you to the New. hope that gives you some idea.

I used to live in Michigan before I came down to Virginia for college. The only place I know of to climb is at Grand Ledge.

well...never been to jackson (tho when I lived in MI, jackwon was the 300th worst place to live in the US b/c of the prison....of course, where i was (midland/bay city/saginaw was like #297) but from midland, it's ~5 hrs to cincinnati, and rrg is about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs from there. jackson is probably closer by about an hr but i don't know how long it would take to get to 75. 75 is straight and FLAT thru ohio....easy to spot cops and drive fast (disclaimer: i take no responsibility for any speeding tickets that may be gotten based on this information ) don't know about other rock in MI, tho (sorry) I didn't climb then.... the Ledges are it Sorry Bro, but I agree with the post about the Niagra Escarpment. I work up in Toronto alot and have climed both the MT. Nemo region (3.75 Hours from Flint) and the Lions Head Region (5 Hours from Flint) Both are really good quality sport arena's and a little closer then the red or the new. Just make sure you have your license and birth certificate to get across the border. Let me know when you get into town, I am just getting back into climbing after about 7 yrs (read as out of shape but working on it) and am looking for some peeps to climb with/get to know.

Thanks for all the info. I'm really interested in going to Niagara Glen. Ready for a road trip when the weather warms up a bit. Also, anyone climb at Planet Rock in Ann Arbor? I might head over there today to check the place out and watch the comp.

DJMEAT, Do tell, do you need some help scouting out possible locations? If so drop me a line and maybe we can cover more ground and share some good beta before we get back up to 30 degrees and realistic outdoor climbing weather.

I've heard rumors that there are Boulders in the thumb area. I also heard there used to be a limestone area in or around Alpena or Adrian or some city starting with an A in upper mid-michigan.

Hours and hour spent combing the topo's on TOPOZONE.COM but nothing looks terribly promissing yet...

I realize this is a year or so later. Did anyone end up uncovering any hidden gems (or rocks) in southern Michigan???? If anyone has any insight I would be in debt to them. Please share...

Recently I briefly returned to Michigan (birthplace) after extensive time out west. This is what I found out: - Lion's Head in Ontario has steep limestone. - The Red and The New are like six hours away? - Tennessee has stuff. - MICHIGAN IS A SOLID, ICE CLIMBING DESTINATION. Last month I attended the 20th Anniversary of the Munising Ice Fest (South East of Marquette, in the Upper Peninsula). I was blown away by the ice quantities. Plus, it was a chance to hang with alpine legends (some big names attend) in a fun and laid-back environ. - Michigan has excellent climbing gyms. - The Ledges in Grand Ledge is probably not worth your time. I heard the local guy there (who used to help guide everyone) has had a change of heart due to environ impact, and is trying to shut down the climbing. It is a small greasy area anyway. I went to school there (MSU); we used to hang out and, ahem, enjoy the views.

The only decent climbing in Michigan is in Canada. Up around Milton area. Grand Ledges is not worth the time as I recall. The one cool route there was an overhanging 5.8 or 9 where you could do a bat hang from your feet before you pulled the jugs through the roof. I wish I could remember the name of the route. If you are in Jackson, you should be able to make it to Devil's Lake in Wisconsin within reasonable weekend driving times. good luck

Please keep considering the UP part of canada. There's great climbing here in the Marquette area, but most people do just head to canada or don't give us much thought. it keeps the yahoos away

i just scoped the route database on Sault Ste. Marie and noticed a few multi pitch mixed (sport/trad) climbs about an hour north. Onterio is starting to look very promising.
