Cold turkey

Who the hell came up with that term to describe abruptly stopping the use of an addictive substance?

Grrr, gave up caffeine yesterday and I am in no way thinking of turkey at any temperature.

Etymology

There are several explanations of the phrase's origin:

* A narrowing of the meaning "suddenly or without preparation", from cold turkey being a dish that requires little preparation; originally used for heroin addicts.[3]
* From the American phrase talk turkey meaning "to speak bluntly with little preparation".[4]
* Some[who?] believe the derivation is from the comparison of a cold turkey carcass and the state of a withdrawing addict — most notably, the cold sweats and goose bumps. [4]
* [citation needed] Related to the period after Christmas/Thanksgiving holidays where alcohol consumption rose - the end of the leftover cold turkey from the family dinners signaled the end of excessive alcohol intake.

Try thinking outside the box; forge your own path.

I think going all warm okra works for caffeine.

Just kidding. I wouldn't touch tofurkey.

Nothing other than getting me addicted to caffeine and possibly some dehydration.

Actually I've never had normal soda. I became diabetic when I was ten and prior to that I wasn't allowed to drink soda. Ever since then when I've had soda it's been diet.

Oh the headaches!

I gave in and had a can of diet mt. dew over lunch. My headache has now subsided down to something tolerable so I can work on my portfolio layout.

Well, now, that didn't take long.

You need to start a 450 step program. Send the diet Dew up a skyscraper via the elevator, and if you can reach it via the stairwell, then you have earned it.

I live in Duluth MN.

No skyscrapers here.

I think I just was silly to stop without stepping down the intake.

Then tie it around a Moose's neck. If you can get it off and drink (the MD not the moose) it without being mauled by the moose, then you've earned it.

It's not the caffeine you should be worrying about, that aspartame can do fucked up shit to your body and brain...

Maybe you should take up drinking coffee or tea.

While I won't say that artificial sweeteners are good for you, there isn't much evidence that they are that bad for you unless you have a rare high sensitivity to them. They certainly aren't addictive. Why do you think they put loads of caffeine in Mt. Dew in the States (they aren't allowed to in Canada)?

Don't go cold turkey. Start drinking green tea. It's good for you and has less caffeine.

I always go cold turkey with my vices though. I went 2 years without caffeine. I'm back on it now but rotate between coffee and green tea.

I quit smoking cold turkey over 3 1/2 years ago too.
Not starting that up again.

Beer on the other hand.....
