I recently negotiated a trade at my local gym, volunteering to make some plywood volumes in exchange for membership.
The two volumes shown were made from materials that I had on hand, cabinet grade birch and mahogany plywood; the gym supplied the t-nuts. The largest measures 47" x 41" x 43" around the perimeter, with 17" of projection from the wall. Mounting will be accomplished with an internal 2" x 10" framing lumber drilled on site to hit 3 or more bolt holes, with additional perimeter screws (optional).
Many thanks to Meatbomz for the beta on the mounting method that he used in a similar project.
Once I get some additional (and cheaper!) 3/4" construction grade 3/4" ply, I will follow up with an article describing the process. Until then, has anyone else made a volume for their home or gym walls? Post pics if you have them.

Those are pretty sweet, Edge. May I ask approx cost of the materials for the triangular one? I look forward to your article. I'd like to make a couple for my new home wall.

Nice work! They really do change the way an area climbs and setting through them becomes a cool new challenge if you are bored with the same old gym walls.

You can make the large pyramid from a half sheet of 3/4" plywood ripped lengthwise to 2' x 8'. At an approximate cost of $30/sheet, you could make two and then have 4 right triangle offcuts to make a third, four sided pyramid.
To make a volume from a 2' x 8' sheet, mark one side at 0", 48" and 96". Mark the opposing side at 24" and 72". Draw lines from 0 to 24, 24 to 48, 48 to 72, and then 72 to 96. This gives you three equal sized triangles and two smaller offcuts.

The latest creation is a 4' x 3' x 20" deep feature made from some leftover plywood scraps provided by the gym. Major PITA working around existing T nuts...

I'll try to get to it soon. You can do the entire construction with a circular saw (and a straightedge if you need one) but I generally do a large amount of the cutting on my cabinetmakers table saw just because it is always clear and available in my shop; it is mostly a minor convenience.

Pretty sweet man, I was doing some research on pods because I’m making a few of them over the next couple days and I remembered this thread. I was wondering if you heard of deck restore http://www.synta.com/...mp;parent=3&pg=1? The climbing wall at one of the local high schools told me about it. We just painted the top of our topout wall with it and I was going to paint our pods with it as well. You can get it at Home Depot and it runs $50 for 2 gallons that cover about 100 sq ft, so it’s not supper expensive. Anyways the pods look sweet, good job on them. I’ll post up some pictures of mine once I get the rest done; I made 2 of the 5 today.

Here's one of the new pods I made with the paint I was talking about.
Still Wet.
After the second coat dryed.
I drilled the T-nut holes after the paint dried.
I'll let you know how it holds up if you're interested.

Thank you for that heads up on the deck restore. I have a whole climbing wall I want to paint with a good grippy surface. I have been looking at different things but haven't seen something recommended by a climber.
I made my first volume, it's a 4' tall shaped liked an imperial cruiser from starwars.

Ok I bought the deck restore, I was going to coat some of my wall with it but it says it's for a horizontal surfaces only. I may end up only doing the volumes because I can paint them on the ground then mount them.

There was a high school out here where they painted their wall after it was built and it had a wired drip effect (hard to explain) but it seemed to work ok. When you paint your volume maybe paint a sq ft or two and see what it does. Make sure you put on at least two coats before you decide.

The local gym dropped off a sheet of 3/4" ply, some construction adhesive, and a box of t-nuts; my mission was to make a half dozen pyramids, 8-12" high and 16-24" per side.
I ended up using slightly more than half of the ply and all of the t-nuts in making a total of seven volumes in two master profiles; total time about 4 1/2 hours.
The gym picked them up this weekend, and I just got this pic sent via my phone.
They go on the walls tomorrow.

They are not, it is just the way they laid them out to let the paint dry.
However, I am designing in my head a 4' long volume which will use the remaining plywood and join 4 triangular and straight ridged sections into a lightning bolt shape. It should be pretty fun once I start making the sawdust fly on that project.
