Little Falls is your best bet. it's basically an outdoor gym and perfect for beginners. Easy topRope set up in all grades.

good luck

get in touch with the syracuse outing club asap. I learned everything I know from those great people.

suoc.syr.edu

The university has this club, and it's only like $20 a year for non-university members to join and gives you access to all the gear for free on club trips (which happen all the time, last weekend, this weekend, next weekend, every weekend....). I suggest you go to the website and figure out how to join the club's email listserv and then you can get in contact with loads of people. Then you can get involved in all kinds of other dope stuff like kayaking and caving (the university gives us a budget like $25k a year!).

I'm living in Egypt right now but I'll be back next Spring, in sha' allah. Perhaps we can do some climbing then?

But yes, your closest area is little falls. The Gunks are a 3 hours drive. The adirondacks have climbing anywhere from like 2 horus away to like 5 hours. 701 Ackerman has a climbing wall being built in the house.

there's local bouldering at clark's reservation (and caves too!).

In the winter there's rad ice climbing at the salmon river falls 45 minutes to the north near water town, to the south near tully there's ice at tinker's falls (small, but close and easy to access). If it's cold enough a cool column comes in.

so ya, there's like one or two places plus access to free gear and rad people in your town......

Nick

When I went to school in Syracuse, I spent a lot of hours traversing the railroad overpass on the West side of Oakwood Cemetery. We spent a lot of time cleaning it up to remove the glass and nasty goop that accumulates after a hard rain. It's a great place to waste an hour or so or practice building anchors down low. Stay away from the choss in the old Quarry.. it's just not worth it imo.

Edited to add: For whatever it's worth, I stumbled across this guide to Moss Island (Little Falls) not long ago. It seems like it was intended for public download. http://thomannengineering.com/...%20Guide%20May08.pdf

Well now that I think about it No.
My best friend is from there , I've been through there never climbed.

I'm sure a climbing club will be a welcome addition
