There will be a Climbers Festival at Skaha on labour day weekend - September 3-4, 2011. The Skaha Climbers have received funding from MEC to support this, as part of BC Parks 100 Years of Adventure. It is planned to have introductory climbing sessions, climbing competitions, gear demos, booths for local clubs, slide shows and talks.
Volunteer help to organize this event is welcomed. Anyone who is interested in assisting, now or later, or just has some suggestions to pass along.

There is now a box of anchor hardware at Peach City Runners. Anyone who wants to volunteer to upgrade an anchor can help themselves.
The box contains some chains and quicklinks, but is mostly full of steel carabiners. The steel biners have pins which are meant to be hammered in. The pins make the biners captive. That is, removing a biner after it has been installed requires snips to cut the pin.
The idea behind this is to prevent accidents such as the one which resulted in Skaha's only fatality, & another near fatality. In those cases, the climbers became confused at the anchors when they had to untie & thread. They ended up falling from the anchor to the ground. Untying the rope at the top of a climb is an obvious opportunity for an accident. In recent years, developers have been leaving aluminum biners at the stations, but aluminum biners wear out quickly.
Especially good candidates for the installation of captive steel biners at the stations are popular moderate routes, where inexperienced climbers are currently required to untie & thread. We're hoping that these clip-&-lower stations can be installed and maintained through volunteer labour.
If you grab some biners, don't forget to grab the pins. The pins are in a baggie floating around in the box. A hammer is required for installation. Don't forget to clip the biner into the chain & flip the biner upside down before hammering in the pin! (Maybe nobody besides me is dumb enough to screw that up.)
The biners were paid for by a long-forgotten account of donated funds, raised at the time the original stairs were built on Braesyde Farm. To replenish the fund, Peach City Runners have agreed to collect donations. There are a couple of signs at Peach City Runners soliciting donations. Anyone wishing to make a donation may do so there.
