Subject says it all... Anyone been to the PA side of DWG since the raptor nesting ban was lifted? How's the trail? Should I plan on bringing a machete?

Hmm.... Posting this in the middle of the night probably wasn't the best way to get a response. So...

We were up there last week, on Teardrop Buttress and Hell & High Water before a storm chased us away. The trail was a little denser with some manageable blowdowns, just a tad rougher than it's normal nasty self.

Was just up there today, as well as a few times last week. There is a new tree down on the trail up. No big deal though the pathway has been diverted under it. If you're heading out to Osprey a machette would be needed much has been overgrown and there is another downed tree. Not a big deal to scramble around it, but some maintenance would be useful. If you feel like doing some light maintenance let me know.

Cool. Thanks guys! Hopefully I'll get up there in the next week or three and I'll likely bring along a bank blade to clear out some of the brush. I'm thinking midweek and not during a heat wave, and I'll likely be needing a partner in case anyone's interested.

A Tuesday would work... I've got a couple projects to finish up before heading out to play, so I'll drop you a PM when I get an idea when I'd be able to head up that way (I'm outside Philly).

Area closed due to Peregrine Falcon nests until further notice. We were there on 4/25/11 and the cold cave and trail were plastered with notices. Tammany had no notices so we paid the .75 cents and went climbing.

I was at Mount Minsi about a month ago. The "falcon" signs were up.

For those who climb there, what's your opinion on the rock quality for placing gear for protection?

Extremely reliable, as long as you know how to evaluate it. Nothing is bomber in a loose block, nomatter how good the rock. The water gap has some extremely bulletproof quartzite though, that is usually as good as a bolt if you find a solid horizontal or vertical crack. The safer (cleaner) routes tend to be the moderate-harder stuff. A lot of the easy stuff is loose, which gives this place its bad rep. What kind of climbing do you enjoy? I can recommend some routes if you want.
