Hey there - how many of you are ice climbers? I am very tempted to try my shot at it this winter. There is a clinic called Chicks With Picks heading out here in February. You can check it out at http://www.chickswithpicks.net/
If I can come up with the cash, I'm gonna check it out.

So, how many of you ladies ice climb? And what is it like?

Tiff

I'm going to be having a go at it some time this month. I'll post my thoughts once I've gone.

Those of you who DO ice climb obviously like it, or you wouldn't keep doing it.....but are there any Ice Climbin' Girl stories you'd like to share with us rank amateurs?

Abby Watkins also does a women's weekend of ice-climbing, this one in the Canadian Rockies.

My friend did Chicks with Picks last season. She had such a great time, she convinced me to get out and try ice climbing also. I loved it. It is a great sport, but it can be a bit cost prohibitive.

My friend is going back to CWP this year. Since I cannot afford it, I will just have to learn all of the tips from my friend.

My experience with ice climbing so far has been 50/50. I've only been 4 times and twice, I thought 'this is the $#!&', whereas the other two times I was hating it but did my best not to disclose my thoughts.

First and foremost... I LOVE the gear! There's nothing like stomping around with two sharp tools, crampons and dressed like you could survive in ANY environment. I also appreciate the fact that you CREATE your 'holds'. However, I'm still trying to acclimate to the cold (just moved from Southern California to Colorado), and one time while climbing, I experienced the pain of frozen fingers thawing out that just about made me lose my stomach and/or faint.

On rock, I enjoy using my background in gymnastics and can feel quite graceful at times, however, so far, with ice climbing I feel like a true gumby. Perhaps it is my beginner technique or maybe I just feel like I'm wrapped up in a month's worth of old newspapers and my mobility is limited.

Overall, I enjoy any opportunity to climb ice since it's all still so new. I would highly suggest taking a clinic as well as learning what you need to keep WARM. I've only heard great things about Chicks with Picks. Check it out if you can.

I'll be at the Ouray Ice Festival next week and am looking forward to participating in a few climbing seminars. Hopefully, that'll boost my positive feelings towards ice above the 50/50 mark. In the meantime, I'm dreaming of Joshua Tree, or my future forays to the Denver front range.

You should definitely try it. If you can deal with the cold, you're sure to love it.

Cheers,
-kelly.

I'm going to the Ouray Fest too. I went last year. It was pretty crowded. But, we didn't have too much trouble finding ice to climb. Overall, I think it was a great trip. It's wonderful because there's ice everywhere and there's also some great natural climbs just outside of Ouray too.

Who else is heading down to Ouray next weekend?
