I found this page this morning, and the kids are working on it already.

CO2 mosquito trap, here I come.
http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf22399231.tip.html

I'll update y'all with progress and see if I can do a portable / camping / dry ice version.

Ooooh, great idea, if it works.

I wonder if it would out-compete me. I am the greatest mosquito attractant, ever. And it looks like mosquito bites are moving from s nuisance category to "get a cortizone shot" category for me. Yukes!

We used to use those at block parties to get wasps. Same set up, but with just a sugar water - or pop in the bottom.

Pop is a verb, or an adverb, or an onomatopoeia. Please stop using it as a noun, unless you're using it as an abbreviation (such as in 'pop culture') or a nickname for your father.

You didn't even need to tape the top to the bottom or wrap the paper around the thing. Just put the pop in it and set the lid on and the wasps would get stuck like crazy.

And you would catch every wasp in the area, so there would be none left to bother you?

I wonder if these have a net benefit on reducing mosquitoes in their vicinity, or attract more to the area than they capture.

of course not. But it gave the impression that something was being done about the wasps. And less of them were around the food then.

The theory, as I understand it, is that CO2 is the primary means by which mosquitoes detect our presence. Once they get closer, they shift over to a related technique which is an aroma we give off. (If I recall correctly, stinky feet type smells attract more mosquitoes). If you flooded the area large quantities of CO2 (say dropping a big chunk of dry ice into a pool), I could see that as an attractor. But since they hone into the trap, my guess would be that you wouldn't see more in the area.

This is a simpler and cheaper version of the traps that burn propane to generate CO2.

As I said, I'll post up results.

I think you should drive them out into the country and release them into the wild.

The carbon in the sugar came from the air, so there won't be any net increase in atmospheric CO2.
