The University of Houston executive administrators has shut down the rock wall on May 12th. The explanation for the closure is weak. The administrators say the wall is unsafe, but will not give specifics. Here is a link to the press release...

Has any schools that you know of close the walls down permanentely?

from the explanation it sounds like someone was being lazy about logging maintenance work or its a wood gym thats been shoddily built and or has had shoddy addons?

kinda hard to say without knowing the gym at hand. I've never heard of a college gym closing unless there was plans to open a new/renovated one in its place.

Weak, they found the wall unsafe and are going to give it a full engineering review. Seems reasonable to me. Better safe than sorry in this case.

Yes, some schools have closed wall permanently, other have closed them until they were refurbished and safe to use again.

Its a Nicros Artwall! Was inspected 2 years ago. A door hinge and the autobelay were the only things needing to be fix. We have been climbing on ropes for 2 years which okay with me.
Talking to the administrators, and pointing out the facts to them, they were not looking at me and trying to claim something that does not exist. One of them was in shock when I informed that an Artwall was the top of the line.
Most of the other gyms in Houston are flat walls, short (25-30ft), slight angles with some texture with some climbing holds on them. The UH wall you could climb the naturals and its 53ft.

This wall is solidly made. Nicros even describe what they put into the walls.

UH is the only school that has wall issue in the state of Texas. You talked to anyone from any of the other schools in the state, and they do not have problems like this. Okay UTSA has problems, but not with their wall, but with the staff.
