How do Rock Climbing Gyms work?

I've never done it before, so just to get an idea:

you pay a fee to use the wall for x amount of time. Say $10/hour or whatever

Then you need a climbing partner, someone to hold the rope for you, is that correct? Well what if you don't have a rock climbing partner? then what do you do ? Do you need to hire a staff member to hold the rope for you?

Also, are you required to rent/bring your own gear? Is it possible or even realistic for a beginner to try to climb with no gear?

Usually the fee is good all day. Or you can get a membership or monthly rates or whatever for savings if you go a lot.

If you don't know how to belay you should take a belay class first thing. That will bring you up to speed so you should be able to trade belays with anyone toproping in the gym. Of course you could go in and just boulder but the boulders walls are usually tough especially for starting out. Occasionally gyms will have auto belay devices that you can use. But there is a lot of headache for gyms to use those I think so they don't use them often.

You should rent climbing shoes if you don't own any and of course you will need to rent a harness and belay device until you own your own.

As a beginner your first gear should be harness, shoes, belay carabiner, belay device. The chalk bag is optional but can be helpful.

You can look online here or at places like MeetUp or Yahoo groups for local climbing clubs and gatherings that you can join. You can make some friends that way or just look for other people with harnesses that aren't climbing and ask them if they would like to trade belays.

Most places you pay a fee $15-25 for the day.

You need a partner. If you have learned how to belay it is not difficult to join in with some other people. If you hire a staff member to belay it is pricey-maybe $30 for an hour of climbing

To do roped climbs you need gear. You can boulder, but that will be hard for a beginner.

-If you are not pulling our leg with this and your other posts, learn some terminology. Then find a meetup group or a friend and go climbing at the gym. They will explain to you what you need to know. You will understand how to climb by trying it on the indoor walls and watching the other people.

Use teh interwebs to locate a local "Climbing Gym," discern their phone number and call them up. They will be more than happy to answer all of your questions with actual answers you'll be able to use and make an informed decision on how to proceed. Or visit them in person to get a sense of the atmosphere as well. Wink

are climbing gyms really that expensive in the US?? over here, we pay the equivalent to $20 per month... a daily fee is just $2.50. and if you dont have a belay partner, the owner or the staff will belay you for free... of course, our gym is very small compared to the ones i have seen in pictures in the US... but its enough to train during the week when we cant go outside....

I'm sure my rent and insurance are higher than outside the US too. We're a small gym in a small town so I'm sure my rent is lower than it is in Boulder or any big city.

It may be cheaper if you are bouldering instead of toproping. Go Google a gym in your area.

You're right Spikey! I can see it...
