Missing dog at NRG: keep your eyes peeled? Thx

Some friends of mine, local boaters, are missing a dog after the July 4th weekend. Though it's largely a shot in the dark, they're understandably desperate to find their baby, and they'd like to spread the word wider than just the local community.

Please have a look. If you happen to know of a climber or any other person who came to the New last weekend and left with a new dog, I'd really appreciate a shout out.

Dear Friends,
Thank you for all of your kind thoughts and efforts so far in our search for the Jasperator.

It's been 30 hours and counting since Jasper's disappearance. We believe that he was picked up by a motorist at the Burnwood Ranger Station, the New River Gorge Visitors' Center, or along US Hwy 19 close to Ames Height Road. He may have also been taken in by a rural home in that area.

We have no way of knowing for certain, but several factors contribute to our theory:
Jasper doesn't run away from us ever, so we don't think he took off into the woods, we think he stayed close to where we got separated and would still be there if someone hadn't taken him.
Jasper is a friendly/outgoing dog and if someone called/beckoned to him, he likely would have approached and even gotten into their car.
We have not found his body and have searched extensively, so we believe he is alive and with a person.
If Jasper was on the Fayetteville side of the river, he would have found his way home, even if he was frightened by the thunder and fireworks.
He got lost at the perfect time to be picked up by a holiday traveler or rafting tourist here for the holiday weekend and then heading home, or by a local resident cruising into town for the fireworks display.
We think that if Jasper is with people and if they were going to try to return him to us, they would have contacted the appropriate authorities today. We want to find him and moving quickly is essential. We are going to appeal to you to take a moment to consider how you can help.

Attached is a PDF of our Help Find Jasper poster. Please consider the following:
Emailing this to anyone in your peer group, near and far. Jasper could have been driven to VA, NC, OH, KY, TN, DC, anywhere by now. Perhaps your friends will be willing to hang up a sign or two. Ask friends to consider posting it at their local grocery stores, Post Offices, Animal Shelters, Vet Offices, truck stops, bars (yes, bars), restaurants, tourism offices and rest stops, anywhere with a bulletin board;
Printing this poster out. Do you work in Beckley, Charleston, Summersville, travel frequently, etc.? If so, will you help us put Jasper's face outside the Fayette County region? Will you hand it to your postal worker and ask him/her to watch for new dogs on delivery routes that meet Jasper's description? Will you hang it in any outlying bars, convenience stores, camp grounds, rafting companies, gas stations, and on telephone poles near your home? On your office refrigerator? In businesses outside our county, even outside our state if you travel outside WV?
Do you work in a large office, hospital, school, store, for the Parks Service? Will you hang it at work?
We hope that Jasper is alive, think that he would like to come home and that he is looking for us. Please help us look for him.

Thank you

It's really shit to loose a dog.

Yeah, losing my basset hound when I was a kid was heartbreaking. Hope the pup shows up, or at least finds his way to a good home.

First, I hope the pooch finds his/her way home. Now the suggestion: get a collar with riveted on tags (Gundog Supply) and have them engrave YOUR name and your cell # on it (free) and add for good measure "needs daily meds". You want them to call you ASAP.

Even better, also have the ID chip implanted in your dog. They can be scanned at any vet office or ASPCA shelter and will never come off. The recovery rate for chipped versus non-chipped dogs is significantly greater. Also effective if your dog is stolen and you need to verify you are the real owner.

Best of luck to your friends on a safe return of their dog.

Chips are wonderful and should be considered mandatory by owners. However, a tag on a collar with clear contact info can be read by anyone.

In case anyone misreads and thinks the chip is in lieu of a collar, I agree 100 % (which is why I suggested doing both).

Good idea! It's like yelling fire when you're getting mugged.

Anywho...

Jasper is back! He didn't get picked up after all. After what must surely have been an epic dog adventure, Jasper turned up 30 miles away at the owner's friend's house—a place where he had been only once before. Gotta be coincidence, right?

On our cat's collar tag we have his name on one side, and the other side says "I'M LOST" with our phone number. Considering he's strictly an indoors cat we want to be called right away if anyone ever finds him outside.

Plus the collar and tag makes him look dashing.

We lost that collar at the vet's after the doc stuck him with a couple of needles and he freaked out.

The new collar is blue with a stunning gold tag.

Here's a pic of Cerb with his collar. You can see the tag is riveted on so it doesn't jingle or catch.

I like the jingling....makes it harder for them to sneak up on you.

Dis iz true. While dog sitting for my in-laws my wife was 'surprised' by the pooch after she got out of the shower.

Damn, there for a second I thought I had opened the Beastforum.com tab on my browser.

You should do a full write up and post it. It has all the makings of a classic.

HA! Nothing like that.

Wife got out of the shower and the sneaky lab got into the bathroom undetected.

While my wife was drying off sneaky lab decided to grab my wife's towel and play with it.

I was alerted to this by my wife shrieking 'no, bad doggie, gimmy back my towel' I walked into the bath to see my wife, sans towel glowering at a lab with a bath towel in her mouth.

Throw a leash on that dog. Oh. Never mind, they are boaters. They'd probably attach it to the wrong end.

And harder to sneak away. In the rhodos, I can hear my dog farther away than I can see her.
