A prime example of why I try to avoid being part of any "movement". What I see happening here is the tensions finally boiling over between the (lamentably few) true skeptics and the faux-skeptics for whom, ironically, it's all about ideological purity. The actual trigger is trivially silly, but the underlying causes run deep.

That's my take, anyway.

Until now I was unaware such important controversies were underway. Having done a 5 min. catch-up on the whole situation, my thoughts could best be summed up as...BWWWWAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

Fucking idiots.

I found it funny that so many people don't see the irony in expressing how deeply, inconsolably disappointed they are in Dawkins, as if the guy were infallible, especially in a situation as plain as this.

His analogy is so terrible it just serves to prove he doesn't understand the situation. If instead of, "man chewing gum" he had written "7ft tall, 250lb leather clad man asking me to his room for coffee" then maybe we could say he at least knows what the problem is.

There's been a few instances in the atheist blogosphere ("definitiongate" for example) where I've noted that many of the most prolific commenters seem to have two apparently contradictory characteristics: they're (a) incredibly anally retentive, and (b) they're severely lacking in reading comprehension skills.

Anyway, Dawkins' input into the conversation can be summed up as #firstworldproblems. My guess is that he didn't actually watch the video that started it all off, but made the unfortunately extremely common mistake of extrapolating from the scale of the furore to assume that the instigator must have said/done something of a similarly over-the-top scale.

Seriously ridiculous storm in a teacup, the whole thing. Diminishes everyone involved.

What I find amusing is that people seem to think that their agreement in regards to the non-existence god makes them a 'community', with similar views on other issues. People feel so lonely in this world (all 6 billion of them) they desperately need to belong to something, apparently.

I think I'm gonna start a community of people who think English food is disgusting and immediately start assuming all of its members share my views on governance, world politics, sports and gender equality. Then I'm gonna post videos on YouTube complaining when I find out they actually don't. And I'm gonna act even more perplexed when I find out the most outspoken individuals display attitudes also found on people who love English food.

I also find it amusing how people get surprised by the fact that intelligent people can be (and very often are) socially retarded.

But it's all Ok, as long as no one is chewing gum in elevators.

Isn't it possible that Dawkins is the elevator man? At least that would make this whole thing more entertaining. Maybe someone should start the rumor within the atheist internet 'movement'.

Just posting a comment. Something like: Anonymous - 11:32 pm posted: Heard from someone close to Watson, the elevator man's name starts with 'R' and finishes with 'ichard Dawkins'.

Since you can't look away anyway, there is what I think might be the only balanced discussion of the subject on the Internet in the July 6 episode of Ardent Atheists. I actually think it's worth listening to.

I don't blame you. 240 thousand words and counting.

This, on the other hand, sums it up wonderfully in just four panels.

So, it seems "elevatorgate" is still simmering away. However, in recent days it's been eclipsed by GelatoGate and BunnyGate.

Gelatogate: Christian gelato shop owner wanders into Skepticon inthe middle of a performance that... isn't flattering... to Christians. Is so upset that he sticks a sign in his window saying Skepticon attendees aren't welcome. Thinks better of it and takes it down not ten minutes later, but not before someone snaps a photo of it and ignites an Internet shitstorm. Posts a two-page, apparently heartfelt apology to the world, which is accepted and called classy by many, and slapped down (along with the latter) by a small but prominent minority. Flame wars ensue. FFS, some are talking apparently seriously about suing the guy under anti-discrimination legislation.

Bunnygate, meanwhile (at least 1600 comments and counting) erupted over the fact that the "silly" character in a comic is a bunny in a dress. I shit you not.

Why is it that every group that bills itself as "rational", "skeptical" and/or "freethinking" inevitably attracts and is eventually overrun by people who are anything but? Fuck it - that's the reason I will never be a part of any such organisation.

In reply to:
Greater scientific literacy and numeracy were associated with greater cultural polarization: respondents predisposed by their values to dismiss climate change evidence became more dismissive, and those predisposed by their values to credit such evidence more concerned, as science literacy and numeracy increased.

More education equals more polarization.
