He uses Petzl gear, and has used different tools for different routes.

OK - I noticed on one of his climbs he had a pair of orange crampons on with some wicked long, horizontal front 'fang' points.....they looked wicked good.....never figured out WHAT brand they ARE!

He uses Petzl gear. I think he likely wears darts or M10's. His tools are usually Nomics or Quark Ergos.

If you're thinking the gear makes him good...think again. he can probably climb harder than anyone here with nobnailed boots and little hardware store ice picks. He's a freaking machine.

Oh I am sure.....someone that good is that good b/c of years of dedication, training, commitment, skill, mental attitude, etc. I'd never expect that using the same gear as Ueli would make me (or any one else for that mater) even 1/1,000th as good as he is....ever. I thought thought the tools he used looked pretty nice is all....

They may not make you as good as him, but why make things harder for yourself? I never really understood not getting the tools that you felt you could climb with the best (as long as you can afford them).

Oh I agree! I don't buy 'tools' to emulate anyone or think that b/c I have this or that 'tool' that I am going to be like one of the 'greats!' However, I think that buying the best equipment one can afford sure can't help......and one should buy the best equipment that they can afford - being brand new gear or lightly used (in the case of ice tools, crampons, etc. and not ropes, carabiners, slings, etc.
