Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.

Holy shit. I had (somehow) never heard of this whole thing before. I had heard the 2 cows joke, but never really got the "Cambodian Communism" part.

Then the other day I was reading the Economist while taking a dump and I read about 3 guys high in the Khmer Rouge who were on trial for crimes against humanity at a special UN backed court in Cambodia. So last night I (big mistake) started wiki surfing this stuff at like 11:30 till (accidentally) 2:30.

That was some fucked up shit! I honestly do not know how I had never heard anything about this whole thing before.

Anyways, yeah. The whole thing blew my mind.

If anyone hasn't heard about this, I reckon it deserves a little reading. Just, uh... don't do it right before you try to fall asleep. Reading about mass murder with hand weapons to save money on bullets = creepy dreams.

The Khmer Rouge was one of those episodes in history that would be too unbelievable if used as a script in a movie. Definitely one of the darkest times in contemporary history, and one of the greatest indicators on how tragically lacking our western education on Asian history is.

Have you heard/read/watched a film about one John HD Rabe? A german nazi living in Mandarin China during the 2nd Sino-japanese war. Quite a character, but remarkably little known in contrast with Oskar Schindler.

Now that we're on the subject of the Japanese and the mid 20th century, have you read about Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army? (warning: gruesome)

You read the economist? Wouldnt have expected that.

Dont know too much about the Khmer Rouge, but yes, i somehow heard that they where insane on a "stupid 80s action movie super villian" level.

Unfortunately, thats the human nature, it seems.

I still need to watch "The Killing Fields" sometime. I worked with a cambodian guy who was about 4 when his family fled the country.

He said that one of his uncles almost murdered one of the babies in their group of people trying to escape in order to keep it quiet. Apparently the mother got the kid quiet somehow and the went unnoticed.
