try kijiji or craigslist or even the bulletin board at the gym for a used pair. You're gonna shred the shit out of 'em anyways if you're just getting started :)

Spadout is a good resource to compare prices online: http://www.spadout.com/c/climbing-shoes/ My local gear shop has seasonal sales where everything is 20% off. Make sure you're on the mailing list for any local stores. You mentioned REI. Have you checked out their yard sale events? As Kartessa said, your local gym may be another good source. I regularly see shoes listed on the gym bulletin board.

Second the idea of checking out local stores. When I first started, I picked up the cheapest pair I could find ($35 Anasazis) which were not only cheap, but I later found out are normally $100+. It's probably a good idea anyway because you can try on shoes in person. If that's not an option, try backcountry.com/backcountryoutlet.com . There's also moosejaw.com, secondascent.com (small local store) , and I've actually seen some decent deals on zappos.com .

There are great deals all over the web but first you need to know what shoes you want. Since youre new to the sport Id go try a bunch on. Climbing shoes fit differently than normal shoes and all companies shoes fit differently in the same size.

Yeah with all the different fits, I'm just going to check out a local outdoor store to try on stuff, because with some brands a 13 is way too tight, but with other brands it's super loose.
