Are the gates still open? I am going to be in Roseburg this weekend and I'm wondering if the gates will be open so we could just drive the road up.. Also, does anybody know if its faster to walk from the upper gate or the lower gate if they are both closed? Thanks! -David

Walk in from lower gate. Nice warm-up early in the morning. Gates will not be open again until fire season ends once we've had some rain. Recommend parking on the pavement and walking in until end of fire season. If you smoke, leave the cigarettes and matches in your rig. Whoever is leaving the camel butts all over the Callahans and Honeycombs would be better off staying at home or in the gym. Your trash can negatively affect our access, besides being poor climbing etiquette.

Gates are open. But access is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. On weekdays you can be sited by the State policia who occasionally wonder the road. Trailheads on top are marked with pink flagging and some still have the 4x4 mileage markers. Mileage is listed in the Umpqua Guide in a south direction from the upper gate (Callahans Road). Start your mileage meter at end of the pavement. Don't be fooled by the valley fog. The lower and heavier the fog is in the valleys, the warmer it will be in the Callahans.
