So I recently climbed in the Red River Gorge of KY and loved it. After some successful climbs and safely returning home I was informed by some coworkers that there's been several cases of some "hill billies" harassing climbers, hikers and campers in the red river gorge. Stories of things being stolen, harassment and one (kind of unrelated but alarming nonetheless) story of a census worker being killed and strung up in a tree. I then heard stories of how several climbers and hikers have invested in handguns because of these situations. My questions here are: Have any KY/OH climbers had any issues at the red river gorge with the locals? Does anyone have any related stories while climbing in the gorge? Any particular areas climbers should be more cautious then others? Or is this just someone blowing smoke? I'm not to particularly worried about this happening and will continue to climb in the area, but thought I'd inquire and at least try to be smarter and safer about it. The last thing I want is to be concentrating on a good climb and having some hill Billy messing with my gear or worse my belayer.

I haven't heard stories of locals actually harassing climbers face-to-face. But break-ins-- sure. This weekend some people had their cars broken into in PMRP. Southern region gets cars broken into with some regularity, depending on whether the particular locals are in jail or out, I guess. And right now the guy is out. Red River Rokhouse was broken into at the beginning of August, I think. Last year there have been break-ins at the Left Flank/Military parking lot on several occasions, and that wasn't the first time, either. I've heard stories from years ago at Roadside. Some people leave the car open on purpose, with windows down (without valuables inside), b/c they want to deal with broken windows. I wouldn't say that this problem is severe enough to make me not want to go climbing at the Red. But it sure as hell is unpleasant.

Yeah, I'm not worried about my vehicle either. I don't keep any form of valuables in it, but am definitely interested to find out if there's any truth in the stories of harrasment. Thanks for sharing. If anyone else has any stories of confrontations with locals in the gorge please share.

I've been going there for 20+ years and never had trouble with locals or break ins. I've left the car parked in lots and on the side of the road NO PROBLEM-O.

Ive been climbing there for years and have heard more stories of stuff getting stolen from sites at Miguels than anywhere else. Either way its not a huge problem. For your sake though, climb elsewhere

I've been there half a dozen times, and going for a week today. I've never had any problems either, hope to never have any for that matter. Left my car open and back Windows down at military wall last time on accident, and luckily everything was there upon return in the am. Would have been a sad day had all my climb gear been ripped off.

I think your gear is just as likely to get stolen there as anywhere else in the world. Don't be fearful of it. Obviously leaving one of your many bags of cash in the front seat is a bad idea... but for the most part if your car is emptied out or gear is in the trunk you don't attract much attention.

Well, almost a week here, and no issues. Haven't heard of any breakins, or harrassment either. Broke into my wallet though for my one vice, Miguels Pizzas! Just can't seem to get enough. Been staying at Kumer's Ridge campground, and no problems here either. Only complaint, Fortress wall was packed, so forced me to head to longs wall for my onsight of Rock Wars. Been on my tick list since my first trip here.
