My friend just showed me this video:

http://www.dump.com/2011/09/07/free-soloing-with-alex-honnold-video/

Dumbest and coolest thing I've seen in a while.

there is nothing dumb about what Alex is doing. He's a world class athlete who knows himself well enough to have the confidence to do things that other people can't. It would be dumb for most other people to try and keep up with him, but I think he's got his shit straight.

Don't fall for that computer video stuff. Alex Honnold isn't really human.

Accidents happen in all kinds of climbing, no matter how good you get. The game is entirely about addressing a lot of the risk via skill and equipment, and not exceeding your idea of acceptable risk. The same personal evaluation process goes into top roping a route as soloing it at Honnold's level, even if the two seem like they have WILDLY divergent levels of risk.

Then you shouldn't do any Free Soloing. I mean really, what do you care what Alex chooses to do?

*edit for spelling*

This is the intranet. Righteous indignation is what we do here.

Alex can do whatever he wants, I was just commenting about how crazy it is as a new climber to see him doing stuff like that.

The only way to survive soloing at that level is to eventually quit doing it. Look at Derek Hersey, John Bachar and Michael What's-his-name.

Dumber and cooler than that time we had unprotected butt sex?

And PotreroEd, Michael Reardon drowned.

And it isn't clear that Bachar was climbing when he had his mishap.

That's the first I've heard that maybe it wasn't a soloing mishap--anyone else heard anything like that??

From what I've read they figured that he was hit in the head by rockfall after topping out, knocking him down the route. That's what was deduced from evidence found.

No, he drowned after being washed off of where he was standing on flat ground near the bottom of some cliffs by a freak wave.

That still makes it a soloing accident.

Did somebody actually witness what happened? He was alone on the ledge and prolly had to do some kind of climbing, either up, down or traversing to get there.

So......

If your on top of a route, anchor cleaned, roped coiled and your getting ready to do the walk off when a rock clips you and knocks you off the cliff, we should say that you got killed soloing? You weren't using a rope at that point in time and you were near a cliff.

Sounds like something some reporter would say, not a climber.

Sounds like a climbing accident to me. Same goes for Bachar, Hersey, Humar, etc.
