I am athletic and strong, and I've done the indoor climbing one time. Killed my forearms but I'd like to learn the techniques and get into the sport. I'm in a location where I'm not near anything that I won't have to sit an hour in traffic for. Closest to me appears to be Costa Mesa's gym, Rockreation. Where can I find someone to learn to climb with? This is such a difficult sport to get into, I have a bunch of friends who lift weights with me, but no desire for this kind of activity. I just can't figure out why not. Here's to hoping I can find someone to gym up with. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=504372890

Unfortunately, The OC isn't the greatest place for climbing, but you really aren't that far from some amazing places like J-Tree, Idylwild and many others.

You should definitely make a habit of going to the gym and start bouldering. That is where you will start to make friends. More consistent you go the more people will get to know you and you will be in! The wife and I go to rockreation twice a week! It is pretty far but is the closest thing to south OC.

Kennoyce and ki6ojv, thanks for the advice. I'll just show up to Rockreation and start going. I will probably see you there if you go after work. I'm trying to get my roommate to head out with me so I have someone to belay me.

I was just at recreation last week actually. My sister and her bf go maybe 5x a week. I unfortunately go to school in Iowa and only get back home a couple of times a year but every time I go in there the regulars are super helpful and it's kind of it's own community. Just start showing up or post on their bulletin board that you are looking for a spotter (and what times). I'm finally coming home in Dec and can't wait to start back up there! Have fun!

So I went yesterday with my roommate. We both loved it! Forearms are exhausted, can't wait for this to be a thing of the past. We paid $21 total, were helped by a wonderful young lady. We researched the figure 8 knot online, and just figured out how to belay eachother with a few tips from the nice lady as well. Very cool gym, was able to complete a 5.10, a couple 5.9's as well. I only had about 4 runs in me though. How many runs do you guys get in on average? Any tips to help with endurance/technique? (I'll be reading up on this as well) Where does a 5.10 put me at?

Well I may not be the best person to dispense advice as Ive been climbing on and off since 2004 but one thing my sister and her bf told me (she is a sponsored climber so I tend to lend weight to what she says) was you just have to climb, but the biggest thing is use your legs, do relaxed movements and become more comfortable with easier routes than just going hardcore and only being able to climb a few more difficult routes. She also recommended the traverse wall and just working on backstepping and high stepping (i think thats what they suggested to me). And I definitely think if you plan on being a regular there its worth it to become a member. Well hope that was helpful!

You should buy a hanger board and climb as often as possible. Look into hitting up Carona del Mar it's very close by.

I'm going to search for a gym in Corona Del Mar, thanks for the tips! Also, a hanger board is a great idea and will help with functional strength, great idea. Thanks Deserttortoise. Donwanadi, I'm sure you're right, but either way I struggled to complete.

You're going to want to ramp up and get your muscles, tendons etc used to climbing anyways. Pushing grades too hard too fast is begging for injury. Good luck and have fun!

Welcome to OC and climbing. Both are great, but you can't have the two together. Just keep going to Rockcreation to meet people. Boulder if you have too. Climbing is the best for getting better at climbing. Although a regular gym is good as long as you not overdoing it loosing your flexability. Corona Del Mar is the beach on the south side of the Newport jetty. Its best during warm sunny days with an off shore Santa Anna type breeze. Keeps the rock dry. As its sand stone, thats best. Reg the route difficulty, don't put too much stock in it. Rather, the gym is where you go to improve strength and technique. And have fun.

Whoa, I used to go to Corona del Mar all the time and I never noticed climbers... though that was 4 years ago and I was mostly skimboarding. Not much beta, but since the beach is so small, shouldn't be too hard to find: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...ove__The_/The_Beach/ Exciting times! Check out the Partner forum here and on MountainProject.com. Good luck.

Orange County, CA. Thanks for the tips guys, I'll try to come back with some pics. I'm going to go to the Corona Del Mar Location hopefully within the next two weeks. I want to get into the rock climbing gym again first.

Totall agree with this, a hanger board isn't something you want to mess with in the beginning, nor is pushing grades. Take your time with training in the beginning, and you'll enjoy it longer. Rush into it, and you'll end up stressin the tendons yer fingers etc. and won't be able to hold onto nuthin before you know it. There are lots of forum threads here that will back this up. Dig into them and you'll learn a lot on the topic of training as a beginner. Most of all though, just have a good time! Cheers, -Teo

Something that really helped me was climbing with people that are stronger than me. I learned a lot of good habits and techniques by watching stronger climbers, and trying to mimic them on TR. I have only been climbing for about 6 months now, so take it with a grain of salt.

Thanks for all of the advice, I think you're right by going with stronger climbers I should learn much quicker. TR stands for? I was in awe at some of the techniques and strength exhibited by people on the bouldering wall. While in the gym (weight lifting, not rock climbing) I bulk up, and looking at these guys, they were not very muscular, but rather slender and vascular. I'll have to be careful how many lb's I gain, even if it's muscle.
