No, more than your friend. Like family. Like, say... a big brother.
In reply to: Officials in Rick Perry's home state of Texas have set off a scientists' revolt after purging mentions of climate change and sea-level rise from what was supposed to be a landmark environmental report. The scientists said they were disowning the report on the state of Galveston Bay because of political interference and censorship from Perry appointees at the state's environmental agency. By academic standards, the protest amounts to the beginnings of a rebellion: every single scientist associated with the 200-page report has demanded their names be struck from the document. "None of us can be party to scientific censorship so we would all have our names removed," said Jim Lester, a co-author of the report and vice-president of the Houston Advanced Research Centre. The official "explanation" is priceless:
In reply to: The agency has defended its actions. "It would be irresponsible to take whatever is sent to us and publish it," Andrea Morrow, a spokeswoman said in an emailed statement. "Information was included in a report that we disagree with." She said Anderson's report had been "inconsistent with current agency policy", and that he had refused to change it. She refused to answer any questions. Information such as direct, long-term measurements of sea level rise in the bay. Reality, in other words. They disagreed with it, so they removed it. War is Peace. Ignorance is Strength. Freedom is Slavery.

I'm continually amazed that people think facts are open to debate and that they can have an opinion concerning them. One may have an opinion as to whether they/we should care about increasing sea levels, but data that indicate sea levels have risen are not open to debate. It cannot be policy that sea levels stay at current levels. wtf.

(sound of cat horking up hairball) It's not like they even want to disguise the fact that they shat on the report. The data must be in the public record....someone should FoIA it and publish a report using the original data.

Actually, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has a point here. Global warming is really not a major threat to the Texas water system, at least compared to whatever stray compound is making Texans so fucking retarded.

I think a (Rep) CNN Political Comentary said it well... (paraphrasing) "Rick Perry always seems to win elections, and it isn't through debating points, being articulate, or even his stance on things... It has always been through sticking a fork in the eyeball of his componant, most usually through negative ad campaigns... He has a lot of $$$, and I forsee lots of ads to start running in key states regarding his opponents."

Wow, looking at the full document makes it look even worse than the article quoted in the OP, and i thought that was hard to do! Deleted figures, deleted references, and extensive editing. WOW!

Do people in Texas actually become stupid--or do stupid people merely gravitate towards Texas? Curt well, having listened to clips from the LV GOP debate, and learning that Gov. Perry cannot correctly pronounce the word "height", I am of the opinion that texas simply grows stupid people, akin to kudzu.

They have done a pretty good job at systematically and proactively moving their understanding of the world and history backwards in the past few years through tweaking their education system.

There must be some intelligent people in Texas?

My favorite 30 Rock episode was when Jack leaves NBC to go work for the Bush administration, and Jack was shocked by the state of decay, looks at the leaking ceiling and says,
30 Rock wrote: Jack Donaghy: The ceiling appears to be leaking. Cooter Burger: No it's not. We've looked into it and it's not. ... Jack Donaghy: Your roof is leaking. Cooter Burger: It's not. I'll show you the study. It so captured the essence of the Bush administration. Ignoring is more passive, they are really working to be ignorant! It is really crazy, but what should we expect from Rick Perry and the like. This is a guy who defended his anti-science positions on evolution and climate change by arguing that Galileo was also denied in his day. Rick, you're not like Galileo, you're a religious nut or the Catholic Church in Galileo's case.

So you're saying that stupid people are to Texas as rabbits are to Australia, or tamarisk is to the Colorado River corridor? See, given how Texans tend to setup franchises but return home eventually, I saw it more like salmon: Its beautiful, if tragic, to see them flopping in the streets after reproducing, aware but seemingly apathetic to the inevitable end to their lives. And soon enough, as their young go out into the world to make their way, they too will return to Texas, their bodies swollen and red to indicate their preparedness to spawn. And the cycle continues. When I was in elementary school, we went to a salmon hatchery to collect fertilized salmon eggs. The hatchery worker caught a male and female, hit them both over the head with a length of pipe, and squeezed the sperm or eggs out of each. I believe the use of that particular metaphor is too frightening to contemplate.
